VB: Santos named All-American again

For the second consecutive season Panola College sophomore Josiane Santos has been named as a NJCAA All-American. Santos was named to the honor this year after being named the Region XIV District K All-Region Player of the Year.

Joining Santos on the all-region first-team was sophomore teammate Marcela Alves. Fillies freshman Nausheen Merchant was named to the second-team all-region squad, while Panola's Samantha Peterson and Hali Turner received honorable mention.

Panola College finished the season ranked No.15 in the NJCAA Division I Poll. The Fillies were joined by National Champion Blinn College (No.1), San Jacinto (No.4), Tyler Junior College (No.6) and Paris Junior College (No.16) as Region XIV college ranked in the final poll.

The Fillies finished the season with a 20-9 record, finishing third in the Region XIV District K race, losing in the regional tournament finals to eventual champion Blinn. In their past two seasons, the Fillies have posted a combined record of 44-14 (75.9%).

Santos, who is from Santo Andre, Sao Paulo, finished the season with 351 kills and a hitting efficiency of 31%. She posted 25 aces, 291 digs, 18 assists and 46 blocks.

Alves, who is from Rio de Janeiro, RJ, posted 332 kills and a hitting efficiency of 40% this season. She had 70 digs, 77 blocks and 18 assists.

Merchant finished the season ranked 14th nationally in digs per set, finishing with 543 digs and averaging 5.17 per set.

Turner recorded 217 digs, 111 kills, 23 aces and 15 blocks.

Peterson, who is from DeSoto, Texas, tallied 127 kills, 54 blocks and 29 digs.
