It wasn't the season that the Center Lady Rider volleyball team had hoped for, but there were bright spots as the team concluded the 2011 campaign Tuesday night.

Under first-year head coach Christie Benton, the Lady Riders captured their first district win since the 2009 campaign when they captured a 3-2 win over Jasper recently. Center had several other league matches that could have been wins if a ball had fallen inside the lines here and there.

CHS lost its season finale to Kirbyville, 14-25, 17-25, 11-25.

After posting a 5-17 regular season and an 0-8 campaign a year ago with a 6-26-1 mark this season and a 1-7 District 18-3A record.

Center did have a two-match winning streak earlier in the year and went 3-1-2 over a six-match stretch in nondistrict play. At one point in the season the Lady Riders' record was 5-14-1.

Benton said she hopes that the foundation laid this year will be a sign of good things to come in the future for the program as the players continue to improve as individuals and as a team.

The Center junior varsity posted a 5-3 mark in District 18-3A action, while the freshmen posted a 4-4 mark, giving the coach hope for improved squads in the near future with stronger subvarsity play. The Lady Rider JV topped Kirbyville, 25-9, 25-20, on Tuesday, while the freshmen lost, 15-25, 25-23, 13-25.
