It hasn't been a smooth first round of District 16-3A action for the Carthage Lady Bulldogs, but they're still in control of their own playoff destiny heading into this second round of league volleyball race.
Carthage (18-12) finished the opening round on a strong note Friday night with a three-set sweep of Pittsburgh in Pirate Gymnasium. The Lady Dogs took the match by a count of 25-23, 25-15, 25-22.
Carthage completed the first round with a 3-2 district mark. The Lady Dogs host Spring Hill Tuesday night (JV,V, beginning at 5 p.m.) to begin the second round. They will then travel to Gilmer on Friday and then visit Gladewater next Tuesday. CHS will then host Henderson and Pittsburgh for their final two regular season matches.
Sara Williams and Macy Cherry dominated play against the Lady Pirates as both of them recorded 14 kills. Jordan Holmes was also active at the net, adding seven kills, while Tambra Mitchell added five and Shelby Soape secured three.
Kenzie Tate kept the offense moving, recording 33 assists for Carthage. She also added five digs and picked up one ace.
Soape led the Lady Bulldogs in digs with 17, with Morgan Wedgeworth adding nine. Williams picked up six digs, Sarah Clakley pitched in five, Cherry and Traylor each accumulated four and Holmes and Mitchell secured one each.
Mitchell led Carthage at the net defensively, picking up four blocks. Soape added three blocks and Williams and Holmes tallied one each.
