The Timpson Lady Bears and Gary Lady Bobcats were looking to turn their misfortunes of a winless start in the District 20-1A volleyball race on Tuesday night and the two squads battled to the limit in Herbert Eakin Gymnasium in Timpson before THS came out on top, 3-2, in this league matchup.

Gary appeared early on as if it might take charge for the victory early on as the Lady Bobcats secured Game 1 of the match, 25-22. But Timpson bounced back to secure Games 2 and 3, 25-11, 25-21, to grab the advantage going into what could have been the clincher.

But the Lady Bobcats bounced back to knot the match at two games apiece with a 25-17 victory, forcing the teams to head into the tie-breaker, knotted up at two games apiece. It was then that Timpson gained the necessary momentum to grab its first league win of the year with a 15-5 victory.

Timpson won its second overall match in a row and third in four matches as the Lady Bears improved to 8-18 on the season, but more importantly 1-2 in District 20-1A competition.

Gary, which started the year off with wins in its first five matches, dropped to 6-14 on the season, 0-4 against league competition.

Harley Martin paced Timpson's defensive attack with 23 digs, while Dustee Tipton added 13, Caitlyn Smith and Kaylie Bush each posted nine, Rachel Reeves had six, Stefanie Hairgrove tallied five and Madison Pierce had three.

On the offensive side, Martin led the lady Bears with three aces, Bush recorded a pair and Reeves had one ace in 20 serves.

Tipton, along with Tammi Harris and Bush produced three kills apiece for THS, while Smith led the team with four and Pierce recorded two.

The Lady Bears will now try to make it two league wins in a row when they visit Carlisle Friday. There will be junior varsity and varsity action beginning at 4:30 p.m.

The Gary freshmen will visit Carthage Friday, while the varsity won't return to action until Tuesday, when the Lady Bobcats host Carlisle. Junior varsity will get underway at 4:30 p.m., with varsity to follow.
