Kaley Nichols and Suzanne Peace combined for 27 digs last Tuesday night, but the Center Lady Riders couldn't quite put it all together in a 3-0 setback at Hemphill.

Center (1-7) will look to get back on track tonight when they host San Augustine. The junior varsity is set to get underway at 5 p.m., with the varsity to follow.

Lady Rider Head Coach Alicia Harding said her team is making progress as the season goes on, it just hasn't been able to get over 'the hump'.

"The girls fought a good fight and gave it a great effort against Hemphill," Harding insisted. "Unfortunately we came up short. But I was not disappointed in what I saw. They showed heart and determination and that's what I like to see in my girls.

"We have a few things to work on, but other than that it looks to be a pretty good season."

Nichols tallied 14 assists and Peace added 13. Ashley Schulz paced Center with five kills, with Maria Valtierra adding four and Ashlyn Johnson knocking in three.

Johnson also led Center with two blocks, while Peace pitched in five assists and Nichols posted four. Johnson and Nichols both had one ace apiece.

Harding credited several players with outstanding efforts in the match.

"I felt that Ashlyn Johnson did an awesome job in the middle blocker position, blocking some big balls and getting some big kills when we needed them the most," the coach stated. "Elena Gonzalez also did an awesome job on serve receive, passing some excellent balls to our setter.

"As a whole, the team did great."

After tonight's match, the Lady Riders will visit Nacogdoches on Friday. The freshmen will get underway at 5 p.m., with the junior varsity and varsity to follow. The next home action will be next Tuesday when CHS hosts Kilgore at 5 p.m.
