UIL exec. committee hands down penalties

AUSTIN, Tx — The State Executive Committee of the University Interscholastic League issued penalties to coaches and schools for violations of UIL rules and handed down decisions on the eligibility of student-athletes on Wednesday.

McKinney High School coach Jennifer Bishop was issued a public reprimand and placed on probation for one year for violation of Sections 1209(f)(1), off-season participation in non-school team sports, and 1209(g), coaching restrictions.

Despite outgaining West Sabine by 71 yards (87-16) in the first quarter and 45 yards (355-310) for the game, the Timpson Bears hurt themselves with double-digit penalties and ill-timed turnovers Friday night as they dropped a 40-20 decision to West Sabine at John Herbert Eakin Stadium in Timpson.

I truly can't believe that it's already the Week 0 of the fall high school football season. It just seems like about a week ago they started two-a-days (although I'm sure there are plenty of athletes across East Texas that would argue with me).

Kenny Washington says his two-year tenure at Timpson High School has been frustrating, for the most part. But after a pair of 3-7 campaigns the third-year coach said it could be time for the 2011 squad to ‘break out’.

Washington admits he didn’t expect the underlying problem of turning the Bear program into a winner to take as long as it has, but he added that he’s beginning to see more and more signs of the athletes of the football program starting to ‘turn the corner’.

TIMPSON, Tx -- The difference between winning and losing can sometimes be measured by the way teams execute - or fail to execute - the small things correctly in a game or scrimmage. Penalties, missed blocking assignments and turnovers are oftentimes the cause of a team winning or losing a game.

NACOGDOCHES, Tx - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team will be holding tryouts Friday, Sept. 2nd at Homer Bryce Stadium. Individuals wishing to walk-on to the football team should attend the pre-practice meeting that will take place at 6:30 a.m. in the Lawton Room of the SFA Athletics Field house. All paperwork will be filled out in the meeting.
