TIMPSON, Tx -- Girls basketball teams in District 22-1A D-I that are in search of a win had better hope they don't have a game scheduled in Timpson's John Herbert Eakin Gymnasium. The Lady Bears are mighty protective of their home court, as the Beckville Ladycats found out here Friday night.

The Tenaha Lady Tigers completed the first half of the District 22-1A race the same way they did a year ago, posted a spotless record and meeting each challenge put before them. Despite the search for a new point guard to replace 2010-11 league standout Okievia Bratchett, THS knocked off Timpson, 53-30, and Shelbyville, 47-41, in overtime last week to improved its league mark to 5-0.

TIMPSON, Tx - The Timpson Lady Bears were all set to go after their first District 22-1A win of the season here at John Herbert Eakin Athletic Complex Friday night, but they were unaware of the tragic news they would get moments before game time.

BECKVILLE, Tx -- Any team that plays the Timpson Lady Bears knows that a double-digit lead is never safe. Just ask the Beckville Ladycats.

After building a 14-point halftime lead Tuesday night here in Bearcat Gymnasium Tuesday night and widening it to 18 midway through the third quarter, Beckville saw the Lady Bears come storming back to trim it to four late in the game before the 'Cats held off the rally for a key 45-36 win.

Some of the best small school basketball in the state of Texas will be showcased next week when Tenaha hosts the Third Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Scholarship Tournament Tuesday through Thursday (Dec. 27-29).

There will be 32 boys and girls team - including 12 of which are ranked in the Top 20 in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches - playing 58 games in local venues to see which squads will walk away with the respective championship trophies.

JOAQUIN, Tx -- First-year Joaquin head girls' basketball coach Carrie Obregon has her Lady Rams scrappin' defensively this season. But on Monday they just flat out took charge. The Lady Rams used an aggressive offensive attack and a stingy defense as they built a 12-point first-quarter lead and then held the Lady Bears scoreless for 10:04 of the second half for an easy 41-17 win over cross-county rival Timpson.

The Beckville Junior High Ladycats captured a pair of wins over Timpson in Bearcat Gymnasium Monday night. The BJHS 7th grade squad recorded a 17-15 victory over the Lady Bears and the Ladycat 8th grade recorded a 17-10 win.

In the Beckville 7th grade victory, Checie Pierce led all scorers with 11 points, while Breanna Dennis added four points and Bailey Jones chipped in two.

GARY, Tx -- The Wells Lady Pirates posted a spotless 4-0 record to capture top honors in the girls' division of the annual Gary Basketball Tournament on Saturday. The Lady Pirates clipped Chireno, 38-36, in the finale.

Overton claimed third-place honors with a 33-21 win over Martinsville, while Cushing took home the consolation trophy with a 49-37 triumph over Shelbyville. Broaddus had to go to overtime to claim the fifth spot in the tournament with a 33-29 verdict over Joaquin.

GARY, Tx -- The Timpson Lady Bears put together one of their strongest performance of the young season in the opening round of the Gary Basketball Tournament Thursday as Jakelia Caraway poured in 22 points to lead THS to a 52-37 win over Douglass.

The Joaquin Lady Rams started on a positive note with a 53-44 win over Beckville, but dropped a 42-25 setback to Wells on the final game of the night and will now have Friday off before heading back to the court on Saturday at 12:45 p.m.
