With each new school year comes excitement of the unknown. It also signifies change and growth. This year we are changing and growing as well.

Beginning today, our website is changing its name to PineyWoodsSports.com. We have added four new towns to our coverage area. And because we have expanded past the boundaries of Shelby County, we felt it only appropriate that we change our name to include this growth, and projected growth of the future.

Timpson Independent School District Athletics Director Kenny Washington has announced that physicals for incoming 7th, 9th and 11th grade athletes are set for Monday, July 26, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the THS Fieldhouse.

Athletes moving from 6th grade to 7th, 8th grade to 9th and 10th grade to 11th must undergo a physical to participate in athletics. An updated physical is also required of if an athlete has sustained a major injury during the past year, Coach Washington stated.

AUSTIN – The five winners of the 2009-10 UIL Lone Star Cup were announced last week.

With three state championships in the 2009-10 season, Conroe The Woodlands High School has captured its fourth Class 5A Lone Star Cup victory in five years. The Highlanders three state titles, most among Lone Star Cup winners, came in boys cross-country, boys swimming and diving and girls soccer.

Center High Head Basketball Coach Hiram Harrison has announced that CHS will be hosting the Center Roughriders Basketball Camp on Saturday, July 17.

The camp is open for boys and girls entering grades 3rd through 7th grades and will take place between the hours of 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Roughrider Gymnasium on the campus of CHS.

The cost per camper is $25, with the cost for each addition sibling being $15.

Timpson high school athletes had their share of highlights during the 2009-10 school year. For their efforts on the field and court, around the track and in the classroom, they were recognized at the annual Timpson High School All-Sports Banquet held at First Baptist Church last week.

Seniors Daylon Hooper and Tan Eaden were both honored for their efforts as they received the top honors for Male and Female Athlete of the Year.

When good teams come down the stretch toward the playoffs, they look to their solid players to lift them up when they need a much-needed 'punch' on either offense or defense. But when great teams need something a little extra, players step up their game to a new level to help the squad in a big game. That's what this week's ShelbyCountySports.com Male and Female Athletes of the Week did in Shelby County when Ty Hubbard of Center and Ashlee Ray of Tenaha picked up their respective squads.

From basketball warm-ups and playoffs to softball and baseball scrimmages to powerlifting, it will be a busy week ahead for Shelby County schools and area colleges.

This past weekend featured some exciting girls hoop action at the Tenaha Special Events Center when THS hosted the Tyler Chapter of Officials Girls Playoff Preview with four exciting games. Some of the best girls' talent in East Texas was played in the eight-team event.

NACOGDOCHES – The Stephen F. Austin Athletics Department is inviting all area youth to take part in the fifth annual "Take A Kid To The Game" promotion set for Saturday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, February, Feb. 20. This coming Saturday the Lumberjacks will host McNeese State, while the Ladyjacks will take on Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 20th. Both games are slated for a 6 p.m. tipoff in the William R. Johnson Coliseum

Tenaha's new Special Events Center will be the host of a plethora of 'playoff previews' and postseason games in the coming days and weeks as basketball playoff fever comes to a boil in East Texas.

Tenaha Superintendent of Schools Don Fallin announced at the opening of the SEC that the Tenaha ISD would do its best to accommodate area schools, while giving area fans a place to go to enjoy great competitive basketball and the Shelby County district has come through.

TIMPSON -- With the end of the season closing in, the Timpson Lady Bears and Joaquin Lady Rams played for pride here in Bear Gymnasium Friday night. Jakelia Caraway scored 23 points, including nine in the fourth quarter, as she led Timpson to a 56-45 victory over JHS.

The victory was the Lady Bears' second in 11 tries in District 22-1A play. It was also the second over Joaquin this season as Timpson improved to 10-16 on the season, 2-9 in league play. Joaquin fell to 3-23, 0-11 in district.
