Led by the girls' singles play of Camryn Sisk, five members of the Tenaha tennis team will be headed to the Class 1A Region IV Tennis Tournament next week after they claimed first or second-place finishes at the District 25-1A Tournament in Beaumont.

Sisk captured the girls' singles district championship on Monday at Lamar University when she defeated Natalie Callazo of Sabine Pass in an emotional three-set final, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

It was a strong outing for the Tenaha High School tennis team on Friday as two members of the squad have already clinched Class 1A Region IV berths, while three others have advanced to finals in the District 25-1A Tennis Tournament, which will take place next Monday in Beaumont.

The opening round of the league tourney was held at Lamar University in Beaumont. The finals are scheduled back at Lamar on Monday, April 9.

Center High School tennis coach Leon Dykes has scheduled a pair of tennis clinics this summer for beginner, intermediate and advanced players to sharpen their skills.

The Shelby County Tennis Clinics will be held in two sessions, with Session I taking place from June 27-30 and Session II taking place from August 1-4.

Student-athletes are just that - both students and athletes - and must maintain passing grade point averages to remain eligible to play the sport they wish to participate in. Many athletes go above and beyond the minimum requirements and are recognized for that hard work.

Tenaha sophomore Camryn Sisk placed second at the District 25-1A Tennis Tournament last Monday at Lamar University in Beaumont and has earned a trip to the Regional Tournament.

In all, eight Tenaha athletes adanced to the quarterfinals and played for medals at the tourney.

Sisk has earned a spot at the Class 1A Region IV Tennis Tournament scheduled for April 20-21 at Texas A&M University in College Station.

Piney Woods high school football teams are gearing up to begin league action this week and next, while volleyball squads are already in the midst of their district runs. That means players are stepping up their games.

Two athletes from the PineyWoodsSports.com coverage area had dominating efforts during the week of Sept. 26 through Oct. 2 and have been honored as Carthage spiker Sarah Anderson and Tenaha gridder Keitron Smith have been named Piney Woods Sports Co-Athletes of the Week.
