With each new school year comes excitement of the unknown. It also signifies change and growth. This year we are changing and growing as well.

Beginning today, our website is changing its name to PineyWoodsSports.com. We have added four new towns to our coverage area. And because we have expanded past the boundaries of Shelby County, we felt it only appropriate that we change our name to include this growth, and projected growth of the future.

AUSTIN – The five winners of the 2009-10 UIL Lone Star Cup were announced last week.

With three state championships in the 2009-10 season, Conroe The Woodlands High School has captured its fourth Class 5A Lone Star Cup victory in five years. The Highlanders three state titles, most among Lone Star Cup winners, came in boys cross-country, boys swimming and diving and girls soccer.

Center High Head Basketball Coach Hiram Harrison has announced that CHS will be hosting the Center Roughriders Basketball Camp on Saturday, July 17.

The camp is open for boys and girls entering grades 3rd through 7th grades and will take place between the hours of 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Roughrider Gymnasium on the campus of CHS.

The cost per camper is $25, with the cost for each addition sibling being $15.

RUSK -- Looking for revenge from last year's Area setback to Grapeland, the Tenaha Lady Tigers got off to a slow start and couldn't overcome a scoring drought of 9:18 over two quarters and the rebounding advantage that the Sandiettes held. THS saw its season come to a crashing end here in Eagle Coliseum in the Class 1A Div. I Area round with a 49-37 setback to Grapeland.

When good teams come down the stretch toward the playoffs, they look to their solid players to lift them up when they need a much-needed 'punch' on either offense or defense. But when great teams need something a little extra, players step up their game to a new level to help the squad in a big game. That's what this week's ShelbyCountySports.com Male and Female Athletes of the Week did in Shelby County when Ty Hubbard of Center and Ashlee Ray of Tenaha picked up their respective squads.

From basketball warm-ups and playoffs to softball and baseball scrimmages to powerlifting, it will be a busy week ahead for Shelby County schools and area colleges.

This past weekend featured some exciting girls hoop action at the Tenaha Special Events Center when THS hosted the Tyler Chapter of Officials Girls Playoff Preview with four exciting games. Some of the best girls' talent in East Texas was played in the eight-team event.

TENAHA -- Many times basketball coaches schedule tough warm-up contests before the playoffs to see exactly where his or her team needs to concentrate on improvement and to bring the athletes back to reality. Tenaha's matchup with Class 2A White Oak did just that Saturday night as the Lady Tigers dropped a 73-50 decision to the Ladynecks in the final game of the Tyler Chapter of Officials Girls Playoff Preview held in the Special Events Center.

TENAHA -- With Woden's lead dwindling in the final moments, Lady Eagle junior guard Destavia Davis stole the ball and drove coast-to-coast for a key layup to help WHS to a 51-45 victory over No.12-ranked (Class 1A, D-I) Lovelady in the Tyler Chapter of Officials Girls' Playoff Preview played here in the Tenaha Special Events Center.

TENAHA -- Marshall used a strong third-quarter performance Saturday afternoon to outscore Whitehouse 15-8 to open up a 12-point lead en route to a 44-34 victory over the Lady Lions in the second game of the Tyler Chapter of Officials Girls Playoff Preview held here at the Tenaha Special Events Center.

The Lady Mavericks (14-7), representing District 13-4A, was led in scoring by a pair of juniors. Jiniki Robinson led the balanced scoring attack with 13 points, while Shakina Minniefield added 10.

TENAHA -- District 22-1A (D-II) champion Saltillo took advantage of a cold-shooting Cayuga squad during the second and third quarters as the Lady Lions erased a two-point deficit after the opening period and raced to a 45-29 victory over Cayuga in the opening game of the Tyler Chapter of Officials Girls Playoff Preview held Saturday afternoon here in the Special Events Center.
