A pair of cross-county rivalries brought out the best in Shelby County athletes this past week as the contests between Shelbyville and Joaquin and another between Timpson and Tenaha highlighted local play. But the most dominating individual effort during the Week of Aug. 29-Sept. 4 came from a little farther north.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - In what turned out to be a wild first week of college football, the Lumberjacks fell two spots to 10th in the Sports Network Top 25 poll announced TSN Executive Director Craig Haley Monday afternoon. The 'Jacks fell four spots to 12th in the FCS Coaches' Top 25 poll, which was also released Monday afternoon.

COLLEGE STATION - Stephen F. Austin Head Coach J.C. Harper elected not to put his players through heavy contact drills during the preseason training camp. And if there was a doubt that the Lumberjack defense would be ready for the likes of Texas A&M in Saturday night's season opener here at Kyle Field, that question was quickly put to rest.

Piney Woods Pigskin Picks will appear each Thursday through Super Bowl Sunday in February as sports minds across the Piney Woods predict the winners in high school, collegiate and NFL games.

The Lumberjacks return one of the most talented groups of linebackers in the country. SFA will benefit from having all three starters back from last year’s Southland Conference Championship squad. It is the return of this imposing group that helped make SFA a unanimous selection to repeat as conference champions in the preseason polls, and a national preseason top 10 selection.

The Lumberjacks enter the 2010 campaign with a veteran defensive line, which is an awkward statement to make considering SFA lost both starting defensive ends including two-time All-American Tim Knicky. But what SFA returns are several players who have been around the program for a significant amount of time, which makes SFA’s defensive front very deep.

The opening weekend of high school football games was huge for the Piney Woods area high school quarterbacks. While the college teams wait another week to get underway, several area schoolboy athletes dominated play in their season openers as six of the eight local teams produced victories.
