Ten area athletes will be in Austin this weekend to represent four schools at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Track & Field Championships, which will be run at Mike A. Myers Stadium, located on the University of Texas campus.

The competition will take place on Friday and Saturday. Four of the athletes will represent Garrison High School, while four are from Timpson and one each from Tenaha and Shelbyville. All will compete in the Class 1A level of competition.

The Tenaha Tigers and Shelbyville Dragons had to take a six-hour bus ride to take part in the Class 1A Region IV Track & Field Meet in Converse. After being moved from Region III to Region IV, the athletes overcame the change in scenery with some impressive performances at the regional meet last week.

The Shelbyville Lady Dragon 4x100-meter relay foursome has posted some of the best times in the state this season. That group was just one of the dominant efforts Shelbyville used as all three relays advanced to the Class 1A Region IV Regional Meet to lead SHS to a third-place finish at Area last week in Zavalla.

ZAVALLA -- The Shelbyville Lady Dragons won the 400-meter and 800-meter relays last Thursday to propel themselves to a second place finish at the District 25-1A Track & Field Meet here at Zavalla High School.

The Lady Dragons scored 125 points, which was a distant second to Zavalla, which posted 196. West Sabine scored 94 for third place, West Hardin ran fourth with 44 and Tenaha scored 42 points to finish in fifth place.

Four Timpson Lady Bears survived the heat and the stiff competition at their regional competition this week and will be headed to Austin on May 14-15 for the State Track & Field Championships.

Shelby County will be well represented next week when athletes from each of the five county high schools participate in their respective Regional Track & Field Championships on Monday and Tuesday.

All Shelby County schools were represented on Thursday at the Regional Qualifiers' Meet held at Hornet Stadium in Hemphill. With the exception of the Center Lady Riders and the Timpson Lady Bears, all regional bound teams were represented at the meet.

Nine members of the Shelbyville Dragon and Lady Dragon track teams qualified for the Class 2A Region III Track & Field in Whitehouse on May 3-4 as they will advance in four girls' and five boys' events after a strong performance at the District 22-2A Track & Field Meet in Newton last week.

Athletes who finished in the top three in each event will advance to the Region III Meet.

CENTER -- Shelby County track teams from Center, Timpson and Shelbyville were among a tough field of competitors as 13 schools converged here at Roughrider Stadium Thursday afternoon for the 2010 Center Rider Relays. Atlanta gained varsity boys supremacy, outdistancing its nearest competitor by a whopping 93 points, while the Palestine varsity girls outscored second-place Atlanta 164-129 to win its division. Atlanta also won the junior varsity boys' division.

Center senior powerlifter Jeremy Small has been named Shelby County Co-Athlete of the Week for events taking place March 21-27 when he advanced to the State Powerlifting Meet for the second straight year.

Small finished fourth in the 165-pound class in 2010 after posting a 4th-place showing at State a year ago. Small lifted 515 pounds in the squat competition, then bench pressed 280 pounds and dead lifted 535 pounds.
