TRCK: Lady Dragons secure 25-1A title

The Shelbyville varsity girls swept all three relays and those efforts combined with several other top finishes by SHS athletes enabled the Lady Dragons to cruise to the girls' division championship of the District 25-1A Track Meet at Zavalla last week.

The Shelbyville 7th grade girls squad claimed first-place honors, while the Lady Dragon eighth grade placed fourth overall at the District 25-1A Middle School Track Meet held last week.

The Shelbyville Dragons and Lady Dragons were in Pineland last week to compete in the Wagstaff Relays in West Sabine. The Lady Dragons finished second overall at the competition.

Mikel Carter won the pole vault and Tristan Sanford came in third in the 110-meter hurdles to highlight the Shelbyville boys action at the meet.

TRCK: Center to host 'Rider Relays Friday

Two Shelby County schools will be part of the 8-team field on hand Friday afternoon as Center High School hosts the annual Roughrider Relays.

The field events will get underway at 3:30 p.m. at Roughrider Stadium, with the 3200-meter race starting approximately 15 minutes after that, according to Center head track coach Matt Gregory. The running events will begin immediately following the completion of the field events.

Ten area athletes will be in Austin this weekend to represent four schools at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Track & Field Championships, which will be run at Mike A. Myers Stadium, located on the University of Texas campus.

The competition will take place on Friday and Saturday. Four of the athletes will represent Garrison High School, while four are from Timpson and one each from Tenaha and Shelbyville. All will compete in the Class 1A level of competition.

The Tenaha Tigers and Shelbyville Dragons had to take a six-hour bus ride to take part in the Class 1A Region IV Track & Field Meet in Converse. After being moved from Region III to Region IV, the athletes overcame the change in scenery with some impressive performances at the regional meet last week.

The Shelbyville Lady Dragon 4x100-meter relay foursome has posted some of the best times in the state this season. That group was just one of the dominant efforts Shelbyville used as all three relays advanced to the Class 1A Region IV Regional Meet to lead SHS to a third-place finish at Area last week in Zavalla.

T&F: Lady Dragons sprint to second at 25-1A Meet

ZAVALLA -- The Shelbyville Lady Dragons won the 400-meter and 800-meter relays last Thursday to propel themselves to a second place finish at the District 25-1A Track & Field Meet here at Zavalla High School.

The Lady Dragons scored 125 points, which was a distant second to Zavalla, which posted 196. West Sabine scored 94 for third place, West Hardin ran fourth with 44 and Tenaha scored 42 points to finish in fifth place.

Four Timpson Lady Bears survived the heat and the stiff competition at their regional competition this week and will be headed to Austin on May 14-15 for the State Track & Field Championships.
