CENTER, Tx -- Center's Aaron Liker and Garrett Stanley captured top honors in the 242-lb. and 165-lb. weight classes, respectively, to lead the Roughriders to their ninth straight meet title as they edged second-place Huntington Thursday night at the Center Powerlifting Meet here in Roughrider Gymnasium.

CENTER, Tx -- Led by four first-place finishes, the Center Lady Riders outlasted a Huntington team that dominated the lightweight divisions and posted the meet's Best Lifter for the heavy platform Thursday night to clip the Devilettes as the CHS took a one-point victory here at the Center Powerlifting Meet in Roughrider Gymnasium.

Two Shelby County athletes posted strong climaxes to their 2011 powerlifting season by finishing in the Top 10 in their respective weight classes at the State Powerlifting Meet held Saturday at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.

Center's Kevinski Pitts made a return trip to the State meet, equaling his 2010 finish of seventh in Division 2 (Class 3A) as he bumped up and competed in the 220-pound weight class in 2011.

It was a disappointing finish to a successful powerlifting season for two area high school athletes at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association State Meet held Saturday in Corpus Christi.

Shelbyville's Kelsi Griffin and Center's Chakera Ingram both earned the trip, with Griffin competing against the state's best for the second straight year and Ingram making her first visit to lift at Corpus Christi.

Two Shelby County powerlifters will compete against the state's best Saturday when Center's Chakera Ingram and Shelbyville's Kelsi Griffin compete in the Texas High School Powerlifting Association State Meet held in Corpus Christi.

Ingram squatted 285 pounds, bench pressed 120 pounds and dead lifted 375 pounds to place third at the Class 3A Region III competition held several weeks ago in Forney. She was in the 148-pound weight class and totaled 780 total pounds between the three events.

Making his second consecutive trip to the Texas High School Powerlifting Association (THSPA) Region III Meet, Shelbyville sophomore Tyler West made the most of his opportunity by capturing a gold medal Saturday in the 123-pound weight class at Rusk High School.

By taking top honors, West has qualified for the THSPA State Meet scheduled for Saturday, March 26, at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.

Shelbyville's Kelsi Griffin has set the bar high and she doesn't plan on taking a back seat to any powerlifter in Class 1A this season. In fact, she's making a strong bid against lifters in all classifications.

Shelbyville powerlifter Kelsi Griffin has qualified for the Class 1A Region III Powerlifting Meet in Forney, according to Shelbyville Director of Athletics Jim Bradford.

Griffin, who advanced to the Class 2A State Powerlifting Meet last year where she finished fourth overall, will be looking for a second consecutive trip at the competition on Saturday.

Center senior powerlifter Jeremy Small has been named Shelby County Co-Athlete of the Week for events taking place March 21-27 when he advanced to the State Powerlifting Meet for the second straight year.

Small finished fourth in the 165-pound class in 2010 after posting a 4th-place showing at State a year ago. Small lifted 515 pounds in the squat competition, then bench pressed 280 pounds and dead lifted 535 pounds.

Shelbyville powerlifter Kelsi Griffin tied her career best by lifting 775 pounds Friday, which was good enough to place fourth in the 165.5-lb. weight class in Class 2A at the State Powerlifting Meet held in Corpus Christi.
