Center senior powerlifter Jeremy Small has been named Shelby County Co-Athlete of the Week for events taking place March 21-27 when he advanced to the State Powerlifting Meet for the second straight year.

Small finished fourth in the 165-pound class in 2010 after posting a 4th-place showing at State a year ago. Small lifted 515 pounds in the squat competition, then bench pressed 280 pounds and dead lifted 535 pounds.

Shelbyville powerlifter Kelsi Griffin tied her career best by lifting 775 pounds Friday, which was good enough to place fourth in the 165.5-lb. weight class in Class 2A at the State Powerlifting Meet held in Corpus Christi.

Two members of the Center powerlifting team will be representing the district at the State Class 3A State High School Powerlifting Meet in Abilene on March 27 after first-place showings at the Region III Meet Saturday at Rusk High School. As a team, Center finished 5th with 14 points.

For Jeremy Small it will be a return trip to State after posting a 4th-place showing in 2009. For Kevinski Pitts, it will be his first trip to face Texas' best.

Shelbyville Lady Dragon lifters Kelsi Griffin and Bailee Wilburn made the trip to Class 2A Region III Powerlifting Meet in Forney on Saturday and came through with strong showings. Griffin had her best lift total of the season and qualified for the State Powerlifting Meet with a total of 775 pounds.

Griffin qualified for the Regional Meet in the 165-pound weight class with a total weight of 755 pounds. She was coming off a first-place performance at Bullard last weekend.

The Shelbyville powerlifting team performed well at the Overton Powerlifting Meet on Saturday as five of the eight Dragon lifters captured medals when competing against some of the top programs in East Texas.

Bailee Wilburn placed second in her division, squatting 300 pounds, benching 135 pounds and deadlifting 260 pounds, for a total combined lift of 695 pounds.
