It may be the spring, but basketball fans can see some high school hoops on Saturday when the Gary ISD hosts the Gary Youth Sports Association Shootout.

Admission is $5 for the day. There will be concessions available at the new Bobcat Gymnasium.

Boys teams from Gary and Carthage will be the main attraction and will be joined by squads from the following high schools: Timpson, Joaquin, Central Heights, Sabine, Carlisle, Sabine and Cushing.

Tenaha senior guard Octavius Griffith led a long list of standout District 22-1A D-I players who were honored for their play on the hardwood this season when he was named the league's Most Valuable Player award by the district's coaches recently.

SHELBYVILLE, Tx -- Holding destiny in their own hands after a home win Friday night over Timpson, the Garrison Bulldogs went out in workman-like fashion Monday night and took care of business, earning the program's first playoff berth in 12 seasons with a convincing 58-35 victory over the Shelbyville Dragons here in Dragon Gymnasium.

SHELBYVILLE, Tx -- Leading by one to begin the fourth quarter Tuesday night, the Timpson Bears went on a 9-0 run over the first 2:15 of the final period. That burst turned out to be enough as the Bears held off a furious Shelbyville rally and THS captured a critical 48-44 District 22-1A D-I win over the Dragons here in Dragon Gymnasium.

The Gary Bobcats know if they want to claim the District 22-1A championship this season, they must knock off the No.4-ranked Tigers. But before they do that they have to defeat all the other squads as well. GHS remained unbeaten in league play Tuesday night when they went on the road to bump off Shelbyville, 48-33, in Dragon Gymnasium.

BECKVILLE, Tx -- In the evenly-matched District 22-1A boys basketball race, each game is magnified as teams scratch and claw their way toward a possible playoff spot. Shelbyville and Beckville didn't want to drop back in the league standings Tuesday night after they both fell in their opening games last week.

TIMPSON, Tx -- Neither the Shelbyville Dragons nor the Timpson Bears have been particularly happy over the start to their basketball seasons. Both squads have struggled to find consistency as they stumbled to 3-11 and 5-13 starts, respectively.

The Joaquin Rams began the season as one of the hottest teams in the area, reeling off 14 wins in their first 17 games. But since the holiday break they've struggled, losing three straight heading into this week's action.

On Friday the Rams dropped their sixth game of the season when they went on the road and shot 32% (18-of-56) from the field and 23% (5-of-22) from behind the three-point arc in a 52-47 setback to cross-county rival Shelbyville in Dragon Gymnasium.

Some of the best small school basketball in the state of Texas will be showcased next week when Tenaha hosts the Third Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Scholarship Tournament Tuesday through Thursday (Dec. 27-29).

There will be 32 boys and girls team - including 12 of which are ranked in the Top 20 in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches - playing 58 games in local venues to see which squads will walk away with the respective championship trophies.
