Lon Morris announces athletics shutdown

Numerous East Texas media outlets are reporting that Lon Morris College in Jacksonville has announced that it is shutting down its athletics department.

That means that more than 300 athletes at the school will not have a team to play for and may be looking to transfer to other colleges.

TYLER, Tx - The Panola College Ponies just missed advancing to the Region XIV Postseason Basketball Championship Tournament this season. But despite not putting anyone on the All-Region team this season, there was some representation on the All-Conference North Zone squad.

BASK: Fillies set to open Region XIV Tourney

The Region XIV Basketball Tournament is scheduled for the Rose City again, but this year at Tyler Junior College's Wagstaff Gymnasium. The Panola College Fillies are the No.8-seed in the women's division, while the Ponies just missed making this year's field.

The tourney was held at UT Tyler the last two years, but a scheduling conflict moved the event across town. The tourney is expected to return to the Herrington Patriot Center next year.

CARTHAGE, Tx - Faced with the realization that there won't be any postseason tournament for them next week and playing in front of their home crowd one last time, the Panola College Ponies did a little 'growing up' Wednesday night when they 'weathered the storm' of a determined Bossier Parish Community College team late and recorded an 80-79 win here in Arthur Johnson Gymnasium.

The Panola College Ponies jumped out to a quick start Saturday afternoon, but Navarro had too much firepower over the long haul, building a nine-point halftime lead and then pulling away in the second half for a 101-77 Region XIV North Zone victory in Athens.

CARTHAGE, Tx — Panola closed regulation with an 8-0 run to send the game to overtime, but Issac Mack's left-wing three-point attempt at the buzzer hit back iron to give Lon Morris a 71-69 win in double overtime Wednesday night here in Arthur Johnson Gymnasium.

CARTHAGE, Tx -- Despite lacking a sense of urgency, the Panola College Ponies had a chance to possibly knock off Region XIV North Zone leader Paris Saturday afternoon, but couldn't get 'over the hump' as the Dragons were able to give a final push and knock off the Ponies, 61-51, here in Arthur Johnson Gymnasium.

CARTHAGE, Tx -- The Kilgore College sophomore tandem of Travis Betran and Fred Mattison combined for more than half of the Rangers' scoring Saturday afternoon and that was enough to squeeze a win out over the Panola College Ponies, 79-72, here in Arthur Johnson Gymnasium.

CARTHAGE, Tx -- The Panola College Ponies couldn't take care of the basketball, turning it over 29 times, while Jacksonville College hit 46.9% (30-of-64) from the field Saturday afternoon as Jaguars won a cross-over Region XIV contest here in Arthur Johnson Gymnasium.
