Coming off one of their best performances of the year in a 3-1 win over No.6-ranked Tyler Junior College on Friday, there wasn't any time for celebration for the 15th-ranked Panola College Fillies as they had to turn around on Saturday and battle the top-ranked Blinn College Buccaneers with a trip to the NJCAA Division I Volleyball National Championship tournament at stake.

Each year teams from NCJCAA Region XIV battle for a chance to get to the league's postseason tournament in hopes of having an opportunity, once they arrive, to get on a roll and claim the tourney championship and a place in the NJCAA National Tournament.

Last year the Panola College Fillies were a hot team, but lost in the semifinal round and were ranked as high as No.7 nationally and finished the year with a record of 24-5.

CARTHAGE, Tx -- There wasn't much doubt that the 15th-ranked Panola College Fillies had been pointing to Thursday night's Region XIV finale in the friendly confines of Arthur Johnson Gymnasium. But whether it was the 'Dig Pink Night' or the emotional Sophomore Night festivities, No.1-ranked Blinn came ready to play and took advantage of every mistake Panola made as the Buccaneers rolled to a 25-17, 25-10, 25-19 sweep of the Fillies, ruining the hometown festivities.

The 18th-ranked Panola College Fillies may just be playing some of their best volleyball of the season. And it couldn't come at a better time with the Region XIV postseason tournament approaching quickly (Nov. 4-5).

The Fillies claimed a pair of key league wins this past week, knocking off 15th-ranked Paris on Friday night, and then going on the road Monday and bumping Navarro College, 20-25, 25-13, 25-15, 17-25, 15-10.

Friday, October 21, 2011

Thursday night's Region XIV volleyball match between 18th-ranked Panola College and No.15 Paris was postponed until Friday because of some off-the-court issues with the Fillies' coaching staff as both head coach Nicole Thorn and her sister and assistant coach, Amber McCray had some unavoidable personal issues come up.
