The Panola College Student Government Association (SGA) is preparing for one of its biggest fundraisers yet. This year the SGA is organizing a 5K (3.1 miles) fun run and a strong man competition to be held on April 21 at the main campus in Carthage. These two competitive events will give students a chance to have fun while competing and raising money for various college organizations.

Three Garrison female runners finished among the top 10 finishers last Tuesday as the Lady Bulldog cross country team captured top honors at the District 20-1A Cross Country Meet.

Area runners Mathew Wood of Gary and Austin Edwards of Garrison earned berths in the Class 1A Region III Cross Country Meet in Humble after corralling individual top 10 finishes last Tuesday at the District 20-1A Cross Country Meet.

Shelbyville's junior varsity girls took the top three spots Saturday as the Lady Dragons cruised to the title of the Rider Invitational cross country meet held here at Center High School. Garrison won the varsity girls' division, with Carthage taking second and Carthage claimed top honors in the junior high girls' division.

CENTER, Tx -- Led by the personal-best times set by Center's Bryan Ruiz and Jose Tello, the Center Roughrider boys cross country team claimed top honors Saturday at the Rider Invitational held here at Center High School.

"It was a good meet with some great efforts by our kids," said Center cross counry coach Donna Shannon. "Now we'll take this coming weekend off and get a good feel for the district course when we attend the Hudson meet (on Oct. 8)."

Led by Bryan Ruiz, the Center Roughrider varsity boys cross country team posted a 13th place finish Saturday at the 2011 Brooks Lumberjack Invitational cross county meet held at Nacogdoches' Pecan Park.

Hudson took the overall varsity finish, with Lufkin placing second, East Bernard coming in third, Spring Hill placing fourth and Bridge City taking the fifth spot.

Two Piney Woods squads are on a collision course early on in District 10-1A D-I play are getting big-play performances by athletes who are taking their play to the next level. Garrison and Shelbyville could be in a showdown for the league title and in their contests on Oct. 15. It was Nathan Burkhalter and Brad Estes that were keys to their respective teams' wins.

Piney Woods high school football teams are gearing up to begin league action this week and next, while volleyball squads are already in the midst of their district runs. That means players are stepping up their games.

Two athletes from the PineyWoodsSports.com coverage area had dominating efforts during the week of Sept. 26 through Oct. 2 and have been honored as Carthage spiker Sarah Anderson and Tenaha gridder Keitron Smith have been named Piney Woods Sports Co-Athletes of the Week.

Area athletes are fine tuning their games as they approach or begin their respective district races. They are putting everything on the line as teams attempt to play their best on the field and courts when their contests count the most.

Two football players in the Piney Woods recorded over 300 yards this past week, while four more finished with over 200 all-purpose yards and four more cleared triple digits.
