It's late at night and I'm sitting here at my computer in my office like I have so many times over the past three years. I'm burning the 'midnight oil' once again. It's the end of an era of sorts, but one which I look back on and smile when I think of all the great memories and friendships I've built.

Some of the best small school basketball in the state of Texas will be showcased next week when Tenaha hosts the Third Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Scholarship Tournament Tuesday through Thursday (Dec. 27-29).

There will be 32 boys and girls team - including 12 of which are ranked in the Top 20 in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches - playing 58 games in local venues to see which squads will walk away with the respective championship trophies.

GARY, Tx -- The Wells Lady Pirates posted a spotless 4-0 record to capture top honors in the girls' division of the annual Gary Basketball Tournament on Saturday. The Lady Pirates clipped Chireno, 38-36, in the finale.

Overton claimed third-place honors with a 33-21 win over Martinsville, while Cushing took home the consolation trophy with a 49-37 triumph over Shelbyville. Broaddus had to go to overtime to claim the fifth spot in the tournament with a 33-29 verdict over Joaquin.

GARY, Tx -- The Timpson Lady Bears put together one of their strongest performance of the young season in the opening round of the Gary Basketball Tournament Thursday as Jakelia Caraway poured in 22 points to lead THS to a 52-37 win over Douglass.

The Joaquin Lady Rams started on a positive note with a 53-44 win over Beckville, but dropped a 42-25 setback to Wells on the final game of the night and will now have Friday off before heading back to the court on Saturday at 12:45 p.m.

A number of area basketball teams will be part of the 31-team field that will converge on the small community of Gary beginning Thursday for a 54-game tournament that will run over three days at Gary High School.

Play will begin on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. with games being played at the old and new gymnasiums on campus. There will be 18 games played on Thursday, nine of which are boys and nine in the girls' bracket. The final games will tip-off at 8 p.m.

JOAQUIN, Tx -- The Martinsville Lady Pirates posted a spotless 3-0 record to capture top team honors in the girls division of Joaquin's A.J. Lawrence Classic over the weekend, while Shelbyville, along with the Lady Rams tied for second with identical 3-1 marks.

Hemphill posted a 1-2 record at the tourney, while Gary and Logansport each went 1-2. Longview Christian, Timpson and Louisiana School were all 0-2.

JOAQUIN, Tx -- The host team from Joaquin, along with the Gary Lady Bobcats were two of the big winners Thursday in the opening day of the annual A.J. Lawrence Classic basketball tournament, which is being played this year here in the new Ram Gymnasium.

Several area teams will be participating in the annual Martinsville Pirate Basketball Tournament, which begins Thursday and will be played through Saturday in Pirate Gymnasium. Boys and girls teams from Joaquin, Timpson and Gary will participate, along with the Shelbyville Lady Dragons.
