It may be the spring, but basketball fans can see some high school hoops on Saturday when the Gary ISD hosts the Gary Youth Sports Association Shootout.

Admission is $5 for the day. There will be concessions available at the new Bobcat Gymnasium.

Boys teams from Gary and Carthage will be the main attraction and will be joined by squads from the following high schools: Timpson, Joaquin, Central Heights, Sabine, Carlisle, Sabine and Cushing.

Tenaha senior guard Octavius Griffith led a long list of standout District 22-1A D-I players who were honored for their play on the hardwood this season when he was named the league's Most Valuable Player award by the district's coaches recently.

TENAHA, Tx -- After getting a late start to the season because of a prolonged football season, the No.2-ranked Tenaha Tigers received some much-needed court time this past week as they tried to 'basketball mode' the Tigers won 3-of-4 contests, including Thursday night's 56-43 victory over San Augustine to place fifth in the Third Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Scholarship Classic.

Some of the best small school basketball in the state of Texas will be showcased next week when Tenaha hosts the Third Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Scholarship Tournament Tuesday through Thursday (Dec. 27-29).

There will be 32 boys and girls team - including 12 of which are ranked in the Top 20 in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches - playing 58 games in local venues to see which squads will walk away with the respective championship trophies.

GARY, Tx -- The 20th-ranked Douglass knocked off the No.2-ranked Wells Pirates, 71-45, to move in a position to play for the boys' championship at the Gary Basketball Tournament this past weekend and then knocked off 11th-ranked Martinsville, 65-47, Saturday night in the title game of the annual event in Bobcat Gymnasium.

GARY, Tx -- After a slow start, the Gary Bobcats got their fast-break offense in gear and controled the Chireno Owls for a 57-44 victory Thursday night in the opening round of the Gary Basketball Tournament here in Bobcat Gymnasium.

A number of area basketball teams will be part of the 31-team field that will converge on the small community of Gary beginning Thursday for a 54-game tournament that will run over three days at Gary High School.

Play will begin on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. with games being played at the old and new gymnasiums on campus. There will be 18 games played on Thursday, nine of which are boys and nine in the girls' bracket. The final games will tip-off at 8 p.m.

JOAQUIN, Tx -- Wyatt Hairgrove and Will Vaughn were a tough one-two punch for the host Joaquin Rams as they posted a spotless 3-0 mark as they captured the boys division of the A.J. Lawrence Classic basketball tournament this past weekend.

Gary only suffered one loss in the tourney, with that setback coming on the final day of the tourney in a 50-48 setback to Corrigan-Camden. But the Bobcats finished with the second-best record of the tourney at 3-1.
