Four members of the Joaquin boys track team earned trips to the Class 2A Region II meet, while a pair of Lady Ram relays and three Lady Rams qualified in six individual events at the District 20-2A Track & Field Meet held Tuesday and Wednesday in Tatum.

The Rams' 800-meter relay foursome of Wyatt Hairgrove, Will Vaughn, Kain Yates and Austin Bloodgood placed third in the event with a time of 1:34.

Two Shelby County schools will be part of the 8-team field on hand Friday afternoon as Center High School hosts the annual Roughrider Relays.

The field events will get underway at 3:30 p.m. at Roughrider Stadium, with the 3200-meter race starting approximately 15 minutes after that, according to Center head track coach Matt Gregory. The running events will begin immediately following the completion of the field events.

Ten area athletes will be in Austin this weekend to represent four schools at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Track & Field Championships, which will be run at Mike A. Myers Stadium, located on the University of Texas campus.

The competition will take place on Friday and Saturday. Four of the athletes will represent Garrison High School, while four are from Timpson and one each from Tenaha and Shelbyville. All will compete in the Class 1A level of competition.

Five members of the Joaquin Lady Ram track team had outstanding performances last Tuesday and Wednesday and will be headed to the Class 2A Region III Track & Field Meet next month after leading JHS to a fourth-place finish at the District 20-2A Track Meet in Tatum.

The Class 2A Region III Meet will take place on May 2-3 at Whitehouse High School. The top three places at the district meet advance.

CUSHING -- The Timpson Bears captured all three relays and claimed top honors in four other events last Thursday to win the team championship at the Cushing Bearkat Relays by 22 points over Central Heights.

The Bears scored 167 points, with the Blue Devils coming in second with 145 and Cushing placed a distant third with only 65 points. Other team finishers included: Beckville, 4th, 57; Tenaha, 5th, 53; Douglass, 6th, 32; Joaquin, 7th, 29; Martinsville, 8th, 12; and Mt. Enterprise, 9th, 2.

With nearly three-quarters of the high school's student body participating in athletics, Joaquin challenges for district titles, regional participation and many other postseason accolades each school year. The Joaquin High School Athletics Booster Club honored those student athletes at the 2009-10 JHS Athletics Banquet held recently at the school.

Four Timpson Lady Bears survived the heat and the stiff competition at their regional competition this week and will be headed to Austin on May 14-15 for the State Track & Field Championships.

Shelby County will be well represented next week when athletes from each of the five county high schools participate in their respective Regional Track & Field Championships on Monday and Tuesday.

All Shelby County schools were represented on Thursday at the Regional Qualifiers' Meet held at Hornet Stadium in Hemphill. With the exception of the Center Lady Riders and the Timpson Lady Bears, all regional bound teams were represented at the meet.

CARTAHGE -- Shelby County athletes from Joaquin, Tenaha and Timpson posted strong finishes last week at the Class 1A Area Track & Field Meet held here at Bulldog Stadium as they jockeyed to finish in the top four positions in order to qualify for the May 3-4 Region III Track & Field Meet set for Palestine.
