It may be the spring, but basketball fans can see some high school hoops on Saturday when the Gary ISD hosts the Gary Youth Sports Association Shootout.

Admission is $5 for the day. There will be concessions available at the new Bobcat Gymnasium.

Boys teams from Gary and Carthage will be the main attraction and will be joined by squads from the following high schools: Timpson, Joaquin, Central Heights, Sabine, Carlisle, Sabine and Cushing.

Joaquin junior guard Wyatt Hairgrove, who led the Rams with 18.5 points per game this season, was named to the District 20-2A Offensive Most Valuable Player by the coaches in the league recently.

Hairgrove was one of five Rams honored by the league as they finished the 2011-12 season with an 18-13 record, placing fourth in the league chase with a 3-7 mark.

On Tuesday night the Joaquin Rams could have solidified their Class 2A playoff hopes. Instead they shot a miserable 21% (11-of-52) from the field, 30% from the charity stripe and turned the ball over 16 times in a 30-27 setback to the Elysian Field Yellowjackets on the road.

JOAQUIN, Tx -- The Joaquin Rams knew that Friday night's game against Harleton here at Ram Gymnasium was a must-win if they want to move in position to nail down a playoff spot. They also wanted to avenge a poor performance on the road against the Wildcats earlier in district play.

Will Vaughn led a balanced Joaquin scoring attack with 15 points, while hitting the boards hard for eight rebounds Friday night to lead the Rams to their first District 20-2A victory of the year, a convincing 45-28 victory over the Elysian Fields Yellowjackets in Ram Gymnasium.

After a hot start to the season, the Joaquin Rams have struggled since the Christmas break, dropping five of their last six. The Rams latest two setbacks have been the biggest, falling in District 20-2A encounters against Jefferson and Harleton.

The Rams fell to Jefferson at home on Friday night, 81-52, and Harleton on the road Tuesday, 48-32, to drop back to 0-2 in league action, 15-8 on the season.

The Joaquin Rams began the season as one of the hottest teams in the area, reeling off 14 wins in their first 17 games. But since the holiday break they've struggled, losing three straight heading into this week's action.

On Friday the Rams dropped their sixth game of the season when they went on the road and shot 32% (18-of-56) from the field and 23% (5-of-22) from behind the three-point arc in a 52-47 setback to cross-county rival Shelbyville in Dragon Gymnasium.

Despite hitting only 7-of-21 field goals, Wyatt Hairgrove led Joaquin with 19 points and four steals Tuesday night as the Rams dropped their second straight, a 67-65 overtime setback at the hands of Logansport, La. in Tiger Gymnasium.
