Joaquin - Baseball

After a 10-6 loss to Tatum at home Tuesday night and a pair of rain delays involving two other District 20-2A games, the Joaquin Rams had to play the waiting game on Wednesday to find out if they were in the playoffs or would have to be involved in play-in action to determine the second and third postseason spots in the league.

JOAQUIN, Tx -- Just like the 'severe weather event' that seemed to circle Ram Field here Tuesday night before a lightning storm suspended and later ended the Rams' regular season finale with one out in the top of the sixth inning, the Rams must have thought the rest of the teams in the District 20-2A race were doing the same.

JOAQUIN -- The Joaquin Rams have a motto this year and the team - and their fans and players wear it proudly on their shirts: "E2W". And when the team made up of a starting lineup with seven underclassmen takes the field, it's that "expect to win" attitude that has kept them motivated.

This week's Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association poll had a surprise or two in the Class 1A ranks as the Garrison Bulldogs bowed out and the Douglass Indians failed to show up.

The Bulldogs, who had moved up from No.8 to No.7 in consecutive weeks, didn't lose since the last poll was released. But nevertheless, Garrison was dropped out despite recording victories over Gary, 15-0, and Martinsville, 16-3, in games cut short because of the 10-run rule.

The Joaquin Rams were hoping to get off to a fast start in the District 20-2A race as they make the jump from Class 1A to 2A this season. They gave Jefferson a run for its money on Friday, only to come upon the short end of a 12-11 score.

Six different Joaquin players had multi-hit games as the Rams (10-6) fell for only the fifth time this season. JHS then dropped a 14-0 decision to Harleton at Ram Field on Tuesday to fall to 0-2 in league play.
