Panola College head baseball coach Todd Shelton will be hosting a baseball camp for youths ages 5-12 early next month.

Shelton said the camp will take place on June 4-6 from 9 a.m. until 12-noon at the Jim Reeves Memorial Field at the Carthage Baseball Complex. The cost of the three-day camp is $75 per individual.

Coaches will concentrate on introduction on basic skills and improvement and development of skills as well.

Area baseball players who want the opportunity to try out for a major league baseball team can try out for the Tampa Bay Rays in Hallsville next month.

Rays management is hosting the open camp on Tuesday, June 12, at Hallsville High School in the attempt to find local talent that could be an asset to the organization. The camp will be supervised by Rays scout Pat Murphy and under the direction of scout Scott Mitchell.

A two-hit performance at the plate by Gage Belrose and Jordan Powdrill, and a strong pitching performance by Will Vaughn on the hill was a winning combination last Friday night as the Joaquin Rams took down the Tatum Eagles, 3-2, at Ram Field in Joaquin.

After starting District 20-2A play with three straight defeats, the Joaquin Rams have come back this week to record a pair of victories to keep their postseason hopes alive. The Rams pounded out 11 hits Tuesday night at Ram Field to knock off Waskom, 11-7.

Joaquin clipped Tatum at home, 3-2, on Thursday night to head into the second round of league play with a 2-3 mark and some momentum. The Rams are currently 10-7 on the season.

With every game being critical in the always-tough District 20-2A race, the Joaquin Rams dropped a 10-5 decision to Jefferson at Ram Field Friday night.

The Rams followed that up with a 4-2 setback to Harleton on the road on Tuesday night to fall back to 8-6 on the season, 0-2 in league play. Joaquin will be at home on Friday night, taking on Elysian Fields at 6 p.m. The Rams will also be at home next Tuesday, April 3, when they battle Waskom.

Lance Lawson had a perfect 3-for-3 night, connecting with a home run, and Patrick Schmutz added a 2-for-2 outing last Monday night as the Joaquin Rams blew past the Logansport, La. junior varsity, 14-0, in a district tune-up for JHS in Logansport.

Lawson blasted a home run, tagged a pair of doubles, drove in three runs and scored once in his best offensive outing of the season for the Rams, who improved to 8-4 on the year with the victory.
