There may be two games remaining in the regular season, but the Joaquin Lady Rams are already in playoff mode. After winning two of their last three games, tonight's (Friday) game against Harleton in Ram Gymnasium could clinch at least a tie for third in the District 20-2A standings with a JHS win.

CENTER, Tx -- Center's Aaron Liker and Garrett Stanley captured top honors in the 242-lb. and 165-lb. weight classes, respectively, to lead the Roughriders to their ninth straight meet title as they edged second-place Huntington Thursday night at the Center Powerlifting Meet here in Roughrider Gymnasium.

CENTER, Tx -- Led by four first-place finishes, the Center Lady Riders outlasted a Huntington team that dominated the lightweight divisions and posted the meet's Best Lifter for the heavy platform Thursday night to clip the Devilettes as the CHS took a one-point victory here at the Center Powerlifting Meet in Roughrider Gymnasium.

Baylor’s Robert Griffin III graces the fifth-annual edition’s striking cover, as does his familiarly-posed bronze trophy, and with good reason — behind Griffin, Baylor completed one of its finest seasons in school history.

The Center Youth Baseball Association has announced signup dates and tryouts for the 2012 spring and summer season.

Parents will have three opportunities in the upcoming weeks to get their children signed up at the Center Middle School Cafeteria. The first signup will be held on Friday, Feb. 3, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The second date is set for Tuesday, Feb. 7, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The final date is Friday, Feb. 10, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

The Joaquin High School powerlifting squads posted strong finishes on the opening meet of the 2012 season Saturday at Elysian Fields. The Rams posted an overall finish of fifth out of 12 teams, led by Austin Underbrink and Armando Robles, who posted first and second place finishes in their respective weight classes.

In the girls competition, Olivia Worsham followed up a strong 2011 season by capturing top honors in her weight class. Loren Johnson placed third.

The Joaquin Lady Rams dropped their second consecutive District 20-2A contest of the season Friday night, falling to Elysian Fields, 55-38, in Ram Gymnasium.

Still in the postseason chase, Joaquin (13-13) didn't help its positioning with the loss as the Lady Rams dropped back to 2-3 against league competition.

Will Vaughn led a balanced Joaquin scoring attack with 15 points, while hitting the boards hard for eight rebounds Friday night to lead the Rams to their first District 20-2A victory of the year, a convincing 45-28 victory over the Elysian Fields Yellowjackets in Ram Gymnasium.

The Joaquin Lady Rams continue to play .500 basketball against District 20-2A competition, splitting their last two games against league foes. The Lady Rams knocked off Jefferson at home last Friday, 37-27, with a tremendous defensive effort, before falling to Harleton on the road on Tuesday, 43-36.

Joaquin is now 13-12 on the year, but still very much in the league's playoff chase with a 2-2 record heading into Friday night's play. Joaquin hosts Elysian Fields at 6:15 p.m.
