MBB: Tigers shake off Gary challenge, 66-45

GARY, Tx -- The Tenaha Tigers and Gary Bobcats came into Friday night's district contest here in Bobcat Gymnasium with identical 4-0 league records. The Tigers left no doubt, however, about who is the 'top dog' in District 22-1A Division I, using their suffocating man-to-man defense to hold the 'Cats to only seven points over the second and third periods, while scoring 35 of their own en route to 66-45 win.

The Gary Bobcats know if they want to claim the District 22-1A championship this season, they must knock off the No.4-ranked Tigers. But before they do that they have to defeat all the other squads as well. GHS remained unbeaten in league play Tuesday night when they went on the road to bump off Shelbyville, 48-33, in Dragon Gymnasium.

GARY, Tx -- The Gary Bobcats turned up the defensive intensity in the second half of Friday night's District 22-1A D-I opener here in Bobcat Gymnasium, holding Beckville to no field goals in the first quarter and only six in the second half as the Bobcats outscored BHS 48-16 in the final two quarters of a 78-29 homecoming win.

A week after being concerned about his team's confidence and level of play with league action nearing, Gary head basketball coach Tony Wood should be feeling better about his team after the 'Cats recorded their second consecutive win.

The Bobcats (10-8) turned the ball over 17 times, but received balanced scoring up and down the lineup on Friday night and used strong second and fourth quarters to record a 47-29 victory over Mount Enterprise in Bobcat Gymnasium.

Leading Harleton 27-20 at the half, the Gary Bobcats held the Wildcats to just two points in the third quarter as the 'Cats pulled away in the final 16 minutes for a 47-36 non district win in Harleton.

The victory snapped a four-game Gary losing skid as Gary jumped back over the .500 mark on the year at 9-8. The Bobcats will host Mount Enterprise Friday before traveling to Douglass on Tuesday (JV,V - 5 p.m.) before opening District 22-1A action next Friday at home against Beckville.

After posting a 16-12 season mark and a third-place finish in the District 22-1A race a year ago, Gary boys head basketball coach Tony Wood felt his program had 'turned the corner' and gained some respect in the league. After graduating three seniors off that squad, Wood is looking for his team to fine tune in the next two weeks as it prepares to open up league play this season.

GARY, Tx -- After falling behind in the first period, the Overton Mustangs turned up the defensive intensity in the final three quarters and then forced nine Gary turnovers in the third quarter to overtake the Bobcats, 44-39, in a nondistrict game played here in Bobcat Gymnasium Thursday evening.

The loss, Gary's fourth straight after it had won three in a row, concerns Bobcat head coach Tony Wood as his team's District 22-1A opener on Jan. 13 against Beckville is coming up fast.

Some of the best small school basketball in the state of Texas will be showcased next week when Tenaha hosts the Third Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Scholarship Tournament Tuesday through Thursday (Dec. 27-29).

There will be 32 boys and girls team - including 12 of which are ranked in the Top 20 in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches - playing 58 games in local venues to see which squads will walk away with the respective championship trophies.
