The opening weekend of high school football games was huge for the Piney Woods area high school quarterbacks. While the college teams wait another week to get underway, several area schoolboy athletes dominated play in their season openers as six of the eight local teams produced victories.

With the opening of the 2010 season officially a week away, high school football teams in the Piney Woods will be doing some necessary fine-tuning in their second scrimmages so they'll have all their pieces in place when Week 0 of the regular season rolls around next week.

GARY - The Gary Lady Bobcats are a work-in-progress as the volleyball team attempts to learn the system of first-year Head Coach Robin Conway. But they're making headway, despite falling to the Waskom Lady Wildcats in the season opener here in Bobcat Gymnasium.

Waskom secured a 25-15, 25-7, 25-12 sweep of GHS, but Conway said after the contest that her team knows where it stands and in what direction it needs to move.

The 'dog days' of August are here and that means high school athletes are returning to the gridiron, volleyball courts and cross country trails with high expectations of district and possibly State titles as they prepared for their upcoming season openers this month.

High school football fanatics who can never seem to get their fill of stats, preseason polls, all-state teams feature stories and the like now have yet another source they can read and enjoy to their hearts content. In a magazine that is similar in style in some ways to Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine, a premier issue of The Old Coach Friday Night Football is now in bookstores and on magazine racks across the state.
