SHELBYVILLE -- The Shelbyville Lady Dragons are in a spot they haven't been in a while - first place in the district race - and they kind of like it. Despite allowing Garrison to creep back into Tuesday night's game here in Dragon Gymnasium after building an 18-1 lead after the first quarter, the Lady Dragons turned on the afterburners at the end to record a 43-28 win.

The Timpson Lady Bears secured their District 22-1A D-I opener Friday night over arch-rival Garrison, 40-29, to grab an early share of the league lead.

In other district openers on Friday, Shelbyville outlasted Gary, 37-28, and Beckville came from behind to knock off Tenaha, 45-42.

TENAHA -- When Hughes Springs guard Shelby Shelton got hot Wednesday night in the final round of the Second Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Classic, Tenaha Head Coach Laura Walker-Holmes put the job of stopping her in the hands of junior guard Whitney Jackson.

TENAHA -- Basketball fans who came out to watch some of the 64 games played by 35 of some of the best boys and girls high school teams from across the state saw the Kountze Lions and the No.1-ranked Saltillo Lady Lions successfully defend their team championships at the Second Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Scholarship Classic, which stretched from Monday through Wednesday.

TENAHA -- The Tenaha Lady Tigers turned in one of their better defensive efforts of the season Monday evening against Sabine, but the THS offense couldn't produce enough points as Tenaha dropped a 44-27 decision to the Lady Cardinals in the second round of the Tenaha Holiday Hoop Classic here at Tiger Gym.

None of the Lady Tigers were able to score in double figures, while Sabine's Ashley Gadson scored 10 fourth-quarter points and led all scorers with 19 points.

TENAHA -- After fighting to a 14-12 halftime lead, the Tenaha Lady Tigers put on an offensive show in the second half Monday by scoring 34 second-half points en route to an easy 48-23 victory over Hemphill in the opening round of the Second Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Scholarship Classic here in the Special Events Center.
