In a battle of the two early District 22-1A heavyweights Friday night, the Tenaha Lady Tigers built a 32-18 halftime lead and then went on to hold off the Garrison Lady Bulldogs, 53-44, in Bulldog Gymnasium to take over sole possession of first place in the league standings.
The loss was the first in district play for Garrison (5-10), which fell to 2-1 in 22-1A action. The Lady Bulldogs are now tied with Beckville (10-12) for second place, one game behind Tenaha (11-11, 3-0 district).

With each game in the District 22-1A girls basketball race being a critical one, Tuesday night's Garrison victory over Shelbyville in Dragon Gymnasium could go a long way in deciding playoff positions and possibly the league champion as the Lady Bulldogs went on the road and received 16 points from Hannah Kimbrough and 11 points and 12 boards from Jaemee Lilley to knock off Shelbyville, 46-38.

Some of the best small school basketball in the state of Texas will be showcased next week when Tenaha hosts the Third Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Scholarship Tournament Tuesday through Thursday (Dec. 27-29).
There will be 32 boys and girls team - including 12 of which are ranked in the Top 20 in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches - playing 58 games in local venues to see which squads will walk away with the respective championship trophies.

GARY, Tx -- The Wells Lady Pirates posted a spotless 4-0 record to capture top honors in the girls' division of the annual Gary Basketball Tournament on Saturday. The Lady Pirates clipped Chireno, 38-36, in the finale.
Overton claimed third-place honors with a 33-21 win over Martinsville, while Cushing took home the consolation trophy with a 49-37 triumph over Shelbyville. Broaddus had to go to overtime to claim the fifth spot in the tournament with a 33-29 verdict over Joaquin.

GARY, Tx -- The Timpson Lady Bears put together one of their strongest performance of the young season in the opening round of the Gary Basketball Tournament Thursday as Jakelia Caraway poured in 22 points to lead THS to a 52-37 win over Douglass.
The Joaquin Lady Rams started on a positive note with a 53-44 win over Beckville, but dropped a 42-25 setback to Wells on the final game of the night and will now have Friday off before heading back to the court on Saturday at 12:45 p.m.

A number of area basketball teams will be part of the 31-team field that will converge on the small community of Gary beginning Thursday for a 54-game tournament that will run over three days at Gary High School.
Play will begin on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. with games being played at the old and new gymnasiums on campus. There will be 18 games played on Thursday, nine of which are boys and nine in the girls' bracket. The final games will tip-off at 8 p.m.

After their season opener last Tuesday against Trinity was cancelled, the Garrison Lady Bulldog basketball team hit the hardwood for the first time on Saturday when it opened the season with a 31-28 hard-fought win over San Augustine in Bulldog Gymnasium.
It was a low-scoring affair early on, but the squads began to heat up in the fourth quarter and that's when Garrison (1-0) put enough offense together to gain the victory.

Girls basketball teams from across East Texas will be in Carthage on Saturday for the 9th Annual Battle on the Border high school scrimmage day, hosted by Panola College.
The event will take place on several venues in Carthage, included the Arthur Johnson Gymnasium and the Finess Center gym on the Panola College campus. Bulldog Gymnasium and the auxilary floor at the gymnasium on the Carthage High School campus will also be utilized.
