Tatum High School defensive coordinator and former successful Center AD and head football coach James Conway has been hired to become the next Athletic Director and head football coach at Timpson High School, TISD Superintendent Dr. Mid Johnson announced this morning.
Conway was chosen from a pool of approximately 90 candidates who applied for the job, Dr. Johnson stated. He said it was his successful experience in the past and qualities as an educator, along with his willingness to work with the community that made him the choice for Timpson.
"James has a lot of successful experience, which was really a big factor in our decision," Johnson said after making the announcement. "He has good qualities as an educator and that is what schools look for.
"We have confidence that he will help turn our program around because he not only has a strong knowledge of the game, but also has a willingness to work with the community and work with me and the other administrators here - and the district as a whole - and give 100 percent effort to do it."
Johnson said a start date for Conway has not get been set and that decision will be made in the coming days. Conway is already a resident of the Timpson area.
Conway replaces Kenny Washington at Timpson. Washington served in the dual roles as AD and head football coach for the past three seasons, finishing with a combined 7-23 (23.3%) record. He posted consecutive 3-7 marks in 2009 and 2010, before falling to 1-9 this past fall.
The last winning season for the Timpson football season came in 2004 when the Bears posted a 7-3 record.
Conway isn't new to the area by any means. He was the AD and head football coach in Center from 1990 until 1998. In those nine seasons he compiled a record of 60-37-3 (61.9%), winning at least seven games in six of those nine seasons and taking the Roughriders to the playoffs six times, including 1991 through 1996.
Piney Woods Sports.com will have more on the Conway hire coming up this weekend.
