FB: Pope, Dawgs lead All-16-3A selections

Led by a pair of sophomores and some outstanding senior leaders, three Carthage Bulldogs led the team's All-District 16-3A football honors this season as selected by the league's coaches.
Senior Edward Pope was named the district's Defensive Most Valuable Player by a unanimous vote. Likewise, the sophomore backfield tandem of quarterback Blake Bogenschutz and running back Tevin Pipkin were named Co-Newcomers of the year by the league's coaches.
Gilmer, which captured the league championship this season, had five superlative honors, while the Dawgs had three and Henderson received one.
Gilmer head coach Jeff Traylor was named Coach of the Year. Gilmer seniors Jordan Traylor and Luke Turner were named Co-District MVPs, while the Buckeyes' Darrion Pollard and Henderson's Del Barnes were named Co-Offensive Players of the Year in the district.
Co-Defensive Newcomers of the Year went to Gilmer sophomores Tanner Barr and Josh Walker.
Pope finished the year with over 60 tackles for the Bulldogs to lead the defensive honors. He had nine pass breakups and three interceptions. He also caused two fumbles. He was also selected to play in the 2012 High School All-American Bowl in San Antonio.
Bogenschutz and Pipkin had equally outstanding offensive seasons as they led the Bulldogs to a 9-4 season mark. The quarterback completed 179-of-324 passes (55.2%) for 2,696 yards, and 24 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions. Pipkin was the workhorse in the Carthage backfield, rushing for 1,707 yards on 242 carries, averaging 7.1-yards per rush. He also scored 11 rushing touchdowns.
The Bulldogs had five first-team offensive selections, with senior receiver Ricky Ingram, senior tight end Clint Cage, senior offensive linemen Greg Brantley and Mitchell Kinman, along with kicker Jimmy Gonzales being honored.
Named to the All-District 16-3A First-Team Defense were defensive lineman Dakota Hart, outside linebacker Trent Jackson, defensive backs Tasker Shannon and Meechie Bowman, along with utility players Mario McCain, K'Aelin Ware and specialty player Major Harris.
Carthage had five second-team offensive players honored, along with four on second-team defense.
The Dawgs had nine honorable mentions and 20 academic all-district players.
