Piney Woods high school football teams are gearing up to begin league action this week and next, while volleyball squads are already in the midst of their district runs. That means players are stepping up their games.
Two athletes from the PineyWoodsSports.com coverage area had dominating efforts during the week of Sept. 26 through Oct. 2 and have been honored as Carthage spiker Sarah Anderson and Tenaha gridder Keitron Smith have been named Piney Woods Sports Co-Athletes of the Week.
Other area athletes who turned in 'Superlative' efforts during that seven-day period included Carthage volleyball player Hannah Hildebrand, Center tennis players Emily Howard and Seth Grant, Shelbyville football player Jesten Brown and Tenaha football players Reginald Davis and Assuntay Cleaver.
Athletes named to the 'Honor Roll' status include Gary volleyball player Katalyn Bird, Shelbyville football player Brad Estes, Mount Enterprise football player Marlon White and Garrison cross country runner Megan Davidson.

Sarah Anderson - Volleyball - Carthage
Sarah Anderson, a senior middle blocker, led the Lady Bulldog volleyball team to a 1-1 week during District 16-3A play when she tallied 26 kills, 12 digs and six blocks in a setback to Gilmer and a win over Gladewater.
Keitron Smith - Football - Tenaha High School
Tenaha linebacker Keitron Smith has dominated play on defense thus far in the 2010 season for the Tigers. Against Harleton Smith posted 21 tackles, while rushing for nine yards on offense in helping the Tigers to a 28-13 victory. Thus far on the season he has posted 95 tackles in six games, averaging 15.8 per game.

Hannah Hildebrand - Volleyball - Carthage High School
Carthage senior setter Hannah Hildebrand had an outstanding week, posting 72 assists, while adding 18 digs, six aces, four kills and a block to help the Lady Dawgs to a 1-1 mark.
Emily Howard - Tennis - Center High School
Center No.3 singles tennis player posted a 6-2, 7-6(7-5) win against Longview and a 6-2, 6-1 victory vs. Van last week. She was also part of the Lady Rider No.2 doubles' duo that picked up an 8-1 victory against Longview and dropped a close 9-8(8-6) setback to Van.
Seth Grant - Tennis - Center High School
Center's No.2 singles player picked up a hard-fought 6-0, 3-6(12-10) win against Longview and a 6-2, 6-1 triumph against Van. He was part of the No.1 doubles duo that fell 9-7 against the Lobos, but recorded an 8-1 victory vs. Van.
Jesten Brown - Football - Shelbyville High School
Shelbyville Dragon running back/defensive back Jesten Brown rushed for 191 yards on 19 carries and caught four passes against Grace Community on the road on Friday. Brown also stood out on defense recording seven tackles, five of which were solo stops.
Reginald Davis - Football - Tenaha High School
Tenaha all-purpose junior standout Reginald Davis rushed for 99 yards on nine carries and found the endzone twice in the Tigers' 28-13 win over Harleton. He also completed his only pass for 34 yards, in addition to catching an 85-yard touchdown pass. Davis also played on defense, recording three tackles.
Assuntay Cleaver - Football - Tenaha High School
Tenaha sophomore quarterback Assuntay Cleaver connected on 9-of-14 (64.3%) passes for 178 yards and a pair of touchdowns against Harleton. He also played on defense, recording five tackles in the Tigers' win.

Katalyn Bird - Volleyball - Gary High School
Gary Lady Bobcat volleyball player Katalyn Bird recorded four kills and eight digs in an outstanding effort on the court.
Brad Estes - Football - Shelbyville High School
Shelbyville quarterback/defensive back Brad Estes completed 17-of-32 (53.1%) of his pass attempts against Grace Community, while throwing for 117 yards. He did have one interception.
Marlon White - Football - Mount Enterprise High School
Mount Enterprise running back Marlon White carried the ball 19 times and gained 104 yards in the Wildcats' 22-14 setback to West Sabine.
Megan Davidson - Cross Country - Garrison High School
Garrison runner Megan Davidson led the Lady Bulldog cross country team at the Red Devil Invitational on Saturday by placing sixth overall with a time of 13:46. The Lady Bulldogs placed fifth as a team.
