Area athletes are fine tuning their games as they approach or begin their respective district races. They are putting everything on the line as teams attempt to play their best on the field and courts when their contests count the most.

Two football players in the Piney Woods recorded over 300 yards this past week, while four more finished with over 200 all-purpose yards and four more cleared triple digits.

Although defenses are playing well, it is the offensive performers that are dominating play, with league play just around the corner. Runners and volleyball players are also going on the offensive.

Joaquin running back Austin Bloodgood and Tenaha all-purpose performer Reginald Davis have been named the PineyWoodsSports.com Co-Athletes of the Week for events played during Sept. 19-25. Both tallied over 300 total yards this past week.

Area athletes being recognized for their 'Superlative' efforts include football players Hunter Holland (Carthage), Brad Estes (Shelbyville), Jesten Brown (Shelbyville), Kain Yates (Joaquin), Tyler McSwain (Joaquin), Keitron Smith (Tenaha), Cortlyn Ware (Carthage), Ty Hubbard (Center) and LaDerius Bryan (Timpson). Carthage volleyball player Hannah Hildebrand, along with Center runners Cala Harless also putting together outstanding individual efforts.

Area athletes named to the PineyWoodsSports.com Honor Roll are Center cross country runner Bryan Ruiz, Garrison runner Megan Davidson, along with Center football player Ryan Goodwin and Shelbyville's James Bradford and Dillon Brown.

Reginald Davis - Football - Tenaha High School
Tenaha all-purpose athlete Reginald Davis tallied 402 yards of offense in the Tigers' matchup with Class 2A Top 10 squad West Rusk in a losing effort. For his effort Davis was named Co-Athlete of the Week.

Davis carried the ball 23 times for 275 yards (12.0-yards per carry) and a pair of touchdowns. He also played quarterback, completing 6-of-9 (66.7%) passes for 89 yards and a TD. In addition, Davis was on the receiving end of three passes for 38 yards.

Austin Bloodgood - Football - Joaquin High School
Also receiving Athlete of the Week recognition was Joaquin running back Austin Bloodgood. Bloodgood had the biggest game of his career, carrying the 'rock' 21 times for 319 yards and four touchdowns. He averaged 15.2-yards per carry. He also scored a two-point conversion.

Hunter Holland - Football - Carthage High School

Carthage running back Hunter Holland continues to pile up the yardage in the 2010 season. He rolled up 243 yards on 14 carries, scoring four touchdowns in just over two quarters of play in a 63-24 win over Center.

Holland added on reception for nine yards and averaged 17.4-yards per carry.

Brad Estes - Football - Shelbyville High School
Shelbyville quarterback Brad Estes helped the Dragons stay unbeaten on the year (4-0) by completing 15-of-21 passes (71.4%) for 235 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a 34-18 win over T.K. Gorman. He also recorded a pair of tackles.

Jesten Brown - Football - Shelbyville High School
Dragon running back Jesten Brown had another stellar all-around effort in Shelbyville's win. He returned a kickoff 95 yards for a score, while rushing for 140 yards on 21 carries and caught one pass for 49 yards.

Brown also worked hard on defense tallying seven total tackles, including two tackles for losses.

Cala Harless - Cross Country - Center High School
Center varsity cross country runner Cala Harless posted the 4th-best time out of 56 runners at the Rider Invitational, posting a 14:31.54 on the rugged course.

Kain Yates - Football - Joaquin High School
Joaquin's Kain Yates averaged 9.8-yards per carry as he posted 156 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries in the Rams' thrilling 48-42 overtime win over Tyler All Saints. He also added a two-point conversion and caught one pass for 26 yards.

Tyler McSwain - Football - Joaquin High School
Joaquin linebacker Tyler McSwain totaled 13 tackles, including six solo tackles as the two-way starter led the Ram charge.

Keitron Smith - Football - Tenaha High School
Tiger linebacker Keitron Smith had his hands full as Tenaha battled one of the top teams in Class 2A. Smith totaled 15 tackles on the night.

Cortlyn Ware - Football - Carthage High School
Carthage wide receiver Cortlyn Ware caught seven passes for 112 yards and a touchdown on the offensive side of the ball. Defensively, Ware intercepted one pass, while totaling two tackles.

Hannah Hildebrand - Volleyball - Carthage High School
Lady Bulldog offensive performer Hannah Hildebrand picked up 31 assists on offense, while managing 13 digs and eight kills for Carthage High School in its setback to No.12-ranked Spring Hill.

Ty Hubbard - Football - Center High School
Center wide receiver Ty Hubbard had a huge game with eight catches for 183 yards and two touchdowns in the Roughriders' losing effort to Carthage.

LaDerius Bryan - Football - Timpson High School
The Bears picked up their second consecutive win as Bryan ran for 195 yards and three TDs on 25 carries. Bryan averaged 7.8-yards per carry.

Bryan Ruiz - Cross Country - Center High School
Center cross country runner Bryan Ruiz tackled the tough course on the campus of Center High School last Saturday, finishing 7th out of 56 runners at the Rider Invitational. He finished the event in 19:39.20.

Megan Davidson - Cross Country - Garrison High School
Davidson garnered Honor Roll recognition at the Rider Invitational in the varsity girls' competition. She placed 7th overall out of 56 runners, finishing the event in 14:55.89.

James Bradford - Football - Shelbyville High School
The Dragons' two-way performer caught five passes for 72 yards, while tallying four tackles on defense for the unbeaten Dragons.

Dillon Brown - Football - Shelbyville High School
Brown posted double-digit tackles, finishing with 10 tackles, including six solos and one tackle for a loss, in the nondistrict win over the Dragons.

Ryan Goodwin - Football - Center High School
Center's Ryan Goodwin was thrust back into the quarterback position during the Roughriders' loss to Carthage. He still rushed for 77 yards on 13 carries, while completing 10-of-16 passes (62.5%) for 161 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.
