The Center boys and girls varsity track teams posted identical fifth-place finishes last Thursday in the annual Rider Relays held at Roughrider Stadium.

Individual results from the meet were not available, but the Center varsity boys team scored 68 points to place fifth, behind Newton (109), Jasper (96), Hudson (95) and Woodville (82).

Two Shelby County schools will be part of the 8-team field on hand Friday afternoon as Center High School hosts the annual Roughrider Relays.

The field events will get underway at 3:30 p.m. at Roughrider Stadium, with the 3200-meter race starting approximately 15 minutes after that, according to Center head track coach Matt Gregory. The running events will begin immediately following the completion of the field events.

Center's Ty Hubbard dominated on the field, on the hardwood and on the track. He was successful in any athletic event that he participated in, whether indoor or outdoor this past year. For his ability to compete at a high level and the success he enjoyed in the 2010-11 school year,  Hubbard received several Center High School Perpetual Athletic awards, being named Most Valuable Player in three sports, the school announced recently.

CENTER -- Cala Harless has found a way to take advantage of one strong love in her live to continue to be blessed with a second one.

Harless, who fell in love with a new-found long-distance running career just last year at Center High School, said she received direction from God when she visited Evangel University in Springfield, Mo., and after talking to the track coach there, signed a national letter of intent to attend the university.

Ten area athletes will be in Austin this weekend to represent four schools at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Track & Field Championships, which will be run at Mike A. Myers Stadium, located on the University of Texas campus.

The competition will take place on Friday and Saturday. Four of the athletes will represent Garrison High School, while four are from Timpson and one each from Tenaha and Shelbyville. All will compete in the Class 1A level of competition.

The competition at the Class 3A Region III Track & Field Meet in Humble was stiff, but the Center athletes gave it their best shot during last week's event at Turner Stadium.

The Lady Riders scored two points at the meet, which was won by Waco Connally with 70 points. Silsbee placed second with 62 points and Mexia was third overall with 56.

DIBOLL -- The Center Lady Riders finished first in a pair of events, while the Lady Rider 4x100-meter relay came in second to lead CHS competitors as the squad finished fourth overall in the girls' division last Wednesday at the District 18-3A Track & Field Meet held here at Lumberjack Stadium.

Center High school recently held it's All-Sports banquet at the CHS Cafetorium. Among those athletes honored were Jeremy Small and O'Mattie Swindle, who received the annual R.E. Malone Awards. The R.E. Malone Award is presented each year to the school's top male and female atheltes.

Swindle was a standout athlete in volleyball, basketball and track. She participated in the Region III Track & Field Meet.

Four Timpson Lady Bears survived the heat and the stiff competition at their regional competition this week and will be headed to Austin on May 14-15 for the State Track & Field Championships.

HUMBLE -- The margin for error for track teams begins to shrink after teams advance past their district meets and head to regional. That margin was magnified Monday afternoon as two of Center's relay teams were disqualified in the preliminary round of the Class 3A Region III Track & Field Championships held here at Turner Stadium.
