The trip that the Center tennis teams will be taking to Bryan on Monday and Tuesday of next week for the Class 3A Region III Tennis Tournament has become the norm for the Center High School tennis program. And the main ingredient in the continued success year in and year out has been head coach Leon Dykes.

Just as their varsity counterparts did, the Center junior varsity tennis team secured first place in each division, along with two second-place finishes, to capture the District 18-3A Junior Varsity Tennis Championship last Tuesday and Wednesday at the Center tennis courts.

In boys' singles action, Center's Chris Dunn secured the top spot, with Chad McMurray of Hudson placing second and Connor Langford of the Hornets coming in third.

CENTER, Tx - In what has become expected in District 18-3A tennis competition over the past 12 years, the Center 'Rider boys and girls tennis teams took the league competition by storm again this season as both squads captured yet another district championship last Wednesday at the CHS Tennis Courts.

The Center Rider tennis team placed fifth among 16 teams at the Texas Tennis Coaches Association (TTCA) Team Tennis Tournament held Friday and Saturday at the Rose Park Center in Abilene.

The Center High School tennis team placed second in the Class 3A Region III Team Tennis competition last weekend in Longview and have qualified for the State Team Tennis Tournament scheduled for this weekend, March 9-10.

The state competition will be held in Abilene on Friday and Saturday, with eight girl and eight boy competitors from Center taking part in the elite event.

The Center Roughriders and Lady Riders swept past the competition at the Jacksonville Invitational tennis tournament last week, outdistancing an 11-team field in both divisions. The 'Riders scored 77.5 points to win the boys by 35 points and the Lady Riders scored 67.5 points to win by five points.

The Center Rider tennis team captured medals in boys A and B doubles, girls A doubles, girls A and B singles and advanced to at least the semifinals in all other events on Tuesday as the Riders posted a second-place finish overall.

Lufkin won the meet. Other squads participating in the 10-team affair included Carthage, Livingston, Jacksonville, Hudson, John Tyler, Central Heights, Nacogdoches and Diboll.

The new Texas Tennis Coaches Association state ranking are due to be released on Friday and by the way the Center Riders are playing, they're sure to be on the rise. The Riders blew past Spring Hill, 15-4, and Hallsville, 13-6, last Saturday to improve their season mark to a spotless 11-0 mark.

Center, which is ranked 13th in the state in last month's poll, have seen its stock rise with three wins since the last rankings.

The Center boys and girls doubles tandems swept past their Nacogdoches counterparts last Saturday as the 'Riders kept their fall season record perfect at 9-0 with a 17-2 domination of the Class 4A Dragons.

Center and Nacogdoches played six extra matches at the competition, with the 'Riders claiming five of those matches as well.

Despite missing three seniors who were taking ACT tests last Saturday, the Center Roughrider tennis team went on the road and kept its season mark perfect with victories over Jacksonville and Hallsville.

CHS rolled past Jacksonville, 14-5, claiming two more wins for an 'unofficial' 16-6 final. The 'Riders then won the competition with Hallsville, 11-5,
