After sluggish play in doubles action, the Center varsity used unbeaten girls' singles play Saturday to knock off Jacksonville, 10-9, at the Roughrider Tennis Courts.

The win boosts Center to 2-0 on the young season. The Riders will return to action on Sept. 11 at Jacksonville, while the junior varsity hosts Kilgore next Tuesday.

Despite trailing Kilgore 5-2 after doubles action on Tuesday, the Center High School tennis team came roaring back to capture eight of 12 singles' matches - including 5-of-6 in boys' play - to claim a 10-9 victory over the Bulldogs in Kilgore.

Center will return to action on Saturday when the Roughriders host Class 4A Jacksonville beginning at 9 a.m. at the CHS tennis courts.

Center's Adam Reeves, 13-year old son of Bob and Sheilah Reeves, overcame temperatures on the court that reached as high as 114 degrees and took first place in the 14-year old division of the USTA ZAT tennis tournament played in College Station this past weekend.

Reeves defeated Pollata of Houston Texas in the final, 6-2, 1-6, 10-8 in a hard-fought match, which saw the two go to a tie-breaker in the final set.

Center High school recently held it's All-Sports banquet at the CHS Cafetorium. Among those athletes honored were Jeremy Small and O'Mattie Swindle, who received the annual R.E. Malone Awards. The R.E. Malone Award is presented each year to the school's top male and female atheltes.

Swindle was a standout athlete in volleyball, basketball and track. She participated in the Region III Track & Field Meet.

It was a tough road, but the Center mixed doubles duo of Dustin Windham and Erika Cordray gave it a great 'ride' before falling in the Class 3A State Semifinals to the eventual State Champions from Abilene Wylie on Monday at the University of Texas at Austin.

Windham and Cordray began their quest for a State title with a hard-fought 7-6 (4), 6-1 sweep of the pair of Maria Larey and William Henderson from Texarkana Liberty Eylau in the quarterfinal round on Monday morning.

The Center High School tennis team produced a strong showing at the Class 3A Region III Tennis Championships in Bryan earlier this week, winning six of their nine opening-round matches as the Riders advanced to the semifinals in two events before falling. But the CHS mixed doubles duo of Erika Cordray and Dustin Windham advanced to the State Tournament in Austin with a second-place finish.

CENTER -- The Center Rider tennis team completely dominated play Tuesday at home as they hosted the District 18-3A Tennis Meet. CHS male and female athletes swept top honors in all five varsity brackets and six other Riders qualified for the upcoming Class 3A Region III Meet in Bryan by placing second in four events.

The UIL Class 3A Region III Championships will be held on April 19-20 in Bryan.

With the District 18-3A Tennis Tournament coming up next Tuesday (April 6) in Center, the Roughrider and Lady Rider netters continue to prepare with tournaments played in Tyler and Lufkin. The results were some impressive individual performances at the tourneys.

The Center High School tennis team posted a 14th place showing this past weekend at the Class 3A Team Tennis State Tournament held in San Marcos.

After capturing the Region III championship last week, the Riders needed four straight wins to capture a State title as they competed against 15 of the best the state has to offer.

For the fifth time in six years, the Center High School tennis team will be participating in the Team Tennis State Tournament in San Marcos. The 13th-ranked Riders used a strong showing by the female players last weekend in Longview as they recorded wins over Athens, 17-2, Pleasant Grove, 17-2, and No.10-ranked Van, 10-8, to capture the Class 3A Region III title.
