The 2nd Annual American Cancer Society’s “Cancer Sucks” Co-ed Softball Tournament will be played Aug. 28 in Center. The tournament is a fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society’s 2011 Shelby County Relay for Life.

Registration is underway and ends Aug. 18. All team members must be at least 18 years old. Team fee is $250. To register your team contact Christie Stringer 598-6627, Kristin Whisenant 591-9506, or Tiffany Pope 591-8933.

Two members of the Center Lady Rider softball team earned First Team All-District 18-3A honors recently as three players on the team were placed on the top two teams, with an additional member of the squad receiving honorable mention all-district.

The Center defense was stingy up the middle in 2010 as the Lady Riders posted an overall record of .500, posting a 16-16 record throughout the season and a 6-8 mark in the always-tough District 18-3A race.

CROCKETT -- Fielding a team that featured six returning starters from last year's State Finalist, the No.10-ranked Alto Lady Jacket softball team is no stranger to pressure. But with their backs to the wall in the best 2-out-of-3 series with Grapeland here at Lady Bulldog Field Friday night, Alto couldn't put together the hits when needed as No.4 Grapeland completed the two-game sweep of the series with a 4-0 victory.

Center High school recently held it's All-Sports banquet at the CHS Cafetorium. Among those athletes honored were Jeremy Small and O'Mattie Swindle, who received the annual R.E. Malone Awards. The R.E. Malone Award is presented each year to the school's top male and female atheltes.

Swindle was a standout athlete in volleyball, basketball and track. She participated in the Region III Track & Field Meet.

A slew of Shelby County and area baseball and softball teams are still participating in the high school playoffs and they will continue this week as teams battle toward possible state titles in their respective classifications.

The Shelbyville Youth Baseball/Softball League will have their Seventh Annual $10,000 Steak Dinner on Saturday, May 15, at 6:30 p.m. at the Shelbyville ISD Cafetorium.

Three Shelby County High Schools have announced their upcoming 2010 Athletic Banquets, with Center and Shelbyville hosting their events on the same night.

The Center High School All-Sports Banquet is scheduled for Thursday, May 6. The event will take place at 6 p.m. in the CHS Cafetorium.

Coaches from all sports will be presenting awards to their top student athletes. There will also be a fajita dinner.

Coming off its biggest victory of the season over state-ranked Carthage, the Center softball team continued its dominating play early on during Tuesday's home finale against Hudson. But the Lady Hornets, who remained tied with Rusk for third place in the District 18-3A race, took advantage of six CHS errors to record an 11-4 win at Lady Rider Field.

The Center Lady Riders produced probably their best all-around performance of the season Friday night and what made the effort even sweeter is it came against arch-rival Carthage. The Lady Bulldogs entered the contest ranked No.15 in the state in Class 3A and in a first-place tie in District 18-3A. Nevertheless, CHS dominated play en route to a 4-2 at Lady Bulldog Field.

The No.25-ranked Rusk Lady Eagles scored five unearned runs, taking advantage of six Lady Rider errors in a 5-0 victory at Lady Eagle Field in Rusk on Tuesday in a District 18-3A softball matchup.
