Center High school recently held it's All-Sports banquet at the CHS Cafetorium. Among those athletes honored were Jeremy Small and O'Mattie Swindle, who received the annual R.E. Malone Awards. The R.E. Malone Award is presented each year to the school's top male and female atheltes.

Swindle was a standout athlete in volleyball, basketball and track. She participated in the Region III Track & Field Meet.

CENTER -- With the first-ever playoff spot in the history of the program on the line Friday night, the Center Lady Rider soccer team had every reason to come out and put on their best performance of the year when it hosted last-place Hudson in the regular-season finale here at Roughrider Stadium. But, instead, Center came up empty, failing to score a goal and forced into a 0-0 standoff with the Lady Hornets, which eliminated CHS from the Class 4A playoff chase.

The 2010 soccer season for the Center Lady Riders has had its share of high and low points. But nothing would be more of a climax for the season - and in the 7-year history of the program - than a win over Hudson tonight (Friday) in Roughrider Stadium.

The team which captured its first-ever District 35-4A win this season, a victory tonight against Hudson would not only be the third league win of the season, but give the Lady Riders their first-ever soccer playoff berth.

The Center varsity girls’ soccer team gave third-place Palestine a run for its money on Friday night, but could capitalize on scoring opportunities as the Lady Riders dropped a 2-0 decision to Palestine at Roughrider Stadium.

Palestine took a 1-0 lead in the first half, and then added another goal, while posting the shutout against CHS.

This has been a historical season for the Center Lady Rider soccer team. But no achievement to this point was larger than the squad's victory Wednesday night when CHS traveled to Hudson and recorded the first district win in the history of the program.

After giving the three top teams in the District 35-4A race a run for their money in the first three league contests, the Center Lady Rider soccer team was looking to get into the win column in a contest that was very 'winnable'. Unfortunately, the Lady Riders didn't play as they had in the previous three contests and fell by a 2-1 count to Diboll last Friday night.

With the inclement weather arriving in Shelby County this afternoon and tonight, all athletic events in the county have been either postponed or cancelled, according to various school officials.

Tonight's District 35-4A soccer matches between Center's boys and girls’ teams against Hudson have been postponed until Wednesday.

After dropping a pair of hard-fought games against true Class 4A schools in their first two District 35-4A contests, the Center Lady Rider soccer team was hoping to pull off an upset when it traveled to Nacogdoches Tuesday night as the early tough road continued. CHS came through with another stellar effort, but came up just short against the Lady Dragons, falling 2-0.

From basketball warm-ups and playoffs to softball and baseball scrimmages to powerlifting, it will be a busy week ahead for Shelby County schools and area colleges.

This past weekend featured some exciting girls hoop action at the Tenaha Special Events Center when THS hosted the Tyler Chapter of Officials Girls Playoff Preview with four exciting games. Some of the best girls' talent in East Texas was played in the eight-team event.

The Center Lady Riders have begun the chase for the District 35-4A championship with arguably the toughest road in the league and their record has shown it. But despite their 4-1 setback to league-leading Jacksonville Saturday at Roughrider Stadium, there was a 'silver lining'.
