The Center boys soccer team continues to battle to get lineups down as well as rotations as the Roughrider work through the early portions of the 2012 season.

Center scored its highest goal output of the young season on Friday night in a 5-1 win over Carlisle, then came back on Tuesday night and was shut out for the first time on the year in a 1-0 setback at the hands of Tatum.

The Center Roughrider soccer got the 2012 season off to a fast start by taking a 2-0 lead at the half Tuesday night en route to a 4-0 blanking of Atlanta at Roughrider Stadium.

Center (1-0), which will continue the season at home Friday night with a 5 p.m. matchup with Carlisle, received a stellar performance in goal by senior Felipe Parra, who did not allow a goal all night.

The Tenaha Tigers surprised the Center with an early goal, but when the 'Riders got on track they began to gain and keep the momentum Friday night as they built a 4-1 lead at the half as they went on to a 7-2 win over the Tigers in scrimmage action at Roughrider Stadium.

The squads played a shorted game, battling for a pair of 30-minute halves. Jose Campos scored on a long ball that appeared to catch the Center defense off-guard just four minutes to put the visiting Tigers on top, 1-0.

Center's Ty Hubbard dominated on the field, on the hardwood and on the track. He was successful in any athletic event that he participated in, whether indoor or outdoor this past year. For his ability to compete at a high level and the success he enjoyed in the 2010-11 school year,  Hubbard received several Center High School Perpetual Athletic awards, being named Most Valuable Player in three sports, the school announced recently.

The Center Roughriders advanced to the Class 4A boys soccer playoffs for the second consecutive year in 2011, marking the first time for the program to accomplish that fete in the team's history. Led by the scoring of junior Eduardo Chavez, CHS posted a season record of 5-11-1 on the year (3-6-1 in district). Chavez was honored recently when he was named the District 35-4A Offensive Most Valuable Player in the league, as voted on by the coaches.

Advancing to the Class 4A State playoffs for East Texas teams forces them to switch gears, mostly because once in the postseason, teams from District 35-4A are forced to play teams from the Waco area.

For the second consecutive season the Center Roughriders have qualified for the postseason, and once again they ran into a seasoned team from Waco and dropped an Area playoff matchup. On Tuesday night CHS fell to Waco High by a 7-1 count at Athens High School.

The Center Roughriders weren't exactly on a roll heading into the playoffs, but CHS Head Coach Richard Ruiz hopes that the two weeks off since their last game will mean new momentum when they begin the playoffs this week.

It might even be called, a season re-start.

CENTER -- With three cancelled matches in their non-district play, the Center Roughrider soccer team wanted to take advantage of playing the 'smaller' District 35-4A schools early on in league play. The mission was completed Friday night when CHS completed a sweep of Hudson and Diboll with a 6-1 verdict over the Lumberjacks at Roughrider Stadium.

After entering District 35-4A play with a pair of losses and two cancelled games, the Center Roughrider soccer team needed a lift Tuesday night. They received it when they went on the road and received three goals by senior Eduardo Chavez in a league-opening 4-2 victory over Hudson.

The Center Lady Riders hoped for the same kind of effort at home, but couldn't take advantage of scoring opportunities in the opening half and then dropped a 2-0 decision to the Lady Hornets here at a cold Roughrider Stadium.
