Shelby County juniors Aaron Liker and Tyler West have been striving to overcome both challenges and obstacles that have come before them during the 2012 powerlifting season. Both were rewarded for their hard work and determination on Saturday when they earned medals at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association State Meet in Abilene.

Despite making it to the Class 3A State Powerlifting Championships a year ago, Center's Chakera Ingram was disappointed in her finish. But she stormed back in 2012 earning a fourth-place finish Friday in Abilene to more than make up for what she felt was a shortcoming a year ago.

Powerlifters Aaron Liker of Center and Tyler West of Shelbyville, along with San Augustine's D.J. Parks, have earned the right to participate in the State Powerlifting Meet in Abilene on March 24 after finishing at or near the top of their respective classes on Saturday in Rusk.

Three area female powerlifters will be making the trip to Corpus Christi March 23-24 after excelling in their respective divisions last Friday at the Region III Powerlifting Meet held in Canton. Center's Chakera Ingram will be making a return trip to State, while teammate Kadijah Cooper and Joaquin's Olivia Worsham will be making their first trips after getting close last season.

The Panola College Student Government Association (SGA) is preparing for one of its biggest fundraisers yet. This year the SGA is organizing a 5K (3.1 miles) fun run and a strong man competition to be held on April 21 at the main campus in Carthage. These two competitive events will give students a chance to have fun while competing and raising money for various college organizations.

Area powerlifters are sharpening up their skills and polishing on their techniques as they continue to prepare for the upcoming respective regional competitions. Many area lifters were in Huntington last Thursday and came through with outstanding efforts as the Center Roughriders captured top honors in the boys' competition, while the Lady Riders and Lady Dragons were third and fourth, respectively, in the girls' division.

The respective regional and state meets are scheduled for next month.

CENTER, Tx -- Center's Aaron Liker and Garrett Stanley captured top honors in the 242-lb. and 165-lb. weight classes, respectively, to lead the Roughriders to their ninth straight meet title as they edged second-place Huntington Thursday night at the Center Powerlifting Meet here in Roughrider Gymnasium.

CENTER, Tx -- Led by four first-place finishes, the Center Lady Riders outlasted a Huntington team that dominated the lightweight divisions and posted the meet's Best Lifter for the heavy platform Thursday night to clip the Devilettes as the CHS took a one-point victory here at the Center Powerlifting Meet in Roughrider Gymnasium.

Center Lady Rider powerlifters Chakera Ingram and Gaby Mireles earned top honors Saturday as they led the Center Lady Rider powerlifting team to the championship at the Hemphill Powerlifting Meet.

Ingram earned Best Lifter on the light platform at the one-day event, while Mireles was named Best Lifter for the heavy platform.

Two Shelby County athletes posted strong climaxes to their 2011 powerlifting season by finishing in the Top 10 in their respective weight classes at the State Powerlifting Meet held Saturday at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.

Center's Kevinski Pitts made a return trip to the State meet, equaling his 2010 finish of seventh in Division 2 (Class 3A) as he bumped up and competed in the 220-pound weight class in 2011.
