Led by Daniel Woodhatch, the Center boys cross country team got a good look at the course they will be competing at for the District 18-3A title on Oct. 22 as they battled competitors at the Hudson Invitational on Saturday and posted a 4th-place finish.

Woodhatch was one of several 'Rider runners who set personal bests as he finished in 21st place overall with a time of 18:09.

Shelbyville's junior varsity girls took the top three spots Saturday as the Lady Dragons cruised to the title of the Rider Invitational cross country meet held here at Center High School. Garrison won the varsity girls' division, with Carthage taking second and Carthage claimed top honors in the junior high girls' division.

CENTER, Tx -- Led by the personal-best times set by Center's Bryan Ruiz and Jose Tello, the Center Roughrider boys cross country team claimed top honors Saturday at the Rider Invitational held here at Center High School.

"It was a good meet with some great efforts by our kids," said Center cross counry coach Donna Shannon. "Now we'll take this coming weekend off and get a good feel for the district course when we attend the Hudson meet (on Oct. 8)."

A large group of area girls participated in the 2011 Brooks Invitational cross country meet held at Pecan Park in Nacogdoches Saturday. Garrison ran 15th overall in the varsity girls' division, while the Shelbyville Lady Dragon junior varsity posted a second place finish. The Carthage JV came in fourth.

Led by Bryan Ruiz, the Center Roughrider varsity boys cross country team posted a 13th place finish Saturday at the 2011 Brooks Lumberjack Invitational cross county meet held at Nacogdoches' Pecan Park.

Hudson took the overall varsity finish, with Lufkin placing second, East Bernard coming in third, Spring Hill placing fourth and Bridge City taking the fifth spot.

Members of the Center High School cross country teams, and coaches as well, participated in the Nacogdoches Helping Hands 5K held Saturday. Leading the way for Center was Luis Perez on the boys' side and Celia Gonzalez for the CHS girls.

Perez claimed top honors in his age group and sixth overall, while teammate Jose Tello was second in his age group and seventh overall at the competition.

Center High School runners Bryan Ruiz and Celia Gonzalez topped the Rider finishers on Saturday at the 14th Annual Davy Crockett Invitational cross country meet as the team continues to build toward next month's district competition.

Ruiz led the Roughriders with a 16th overall finish at the competition, while teammate Jose Tello came in 26th.

Daniel Woodhatch also competed for the Center boys' varsity.

The Center High School cross country teams opened the season at Hudson Saturday as the Roughriders and Lady Riders participated in the Hudson Cross Country Team Relays to begin the 2011 season.

According to Center cross country coach Donna Shannon, individual runners partnered up at the competition, with each runner competing in a 'leg' of the race. The girls ran a mile (four miles total) and the boys ran 1.5 miles (six miles total) of the race twice.

Center's Ty Hubbard dominated on the field, on the hardwood and on the track. He was successful in any athletic event that he participated in, whether indoor or outdoor this past year. For his ability to compete at a high level and the success he enjoyed in the 2010-11 school year,  Hubbard received several Center High School Perpetual Athletic awards, being named Most Valuable Player in three sports, the school announced recently.

CENTER -- Cala Harless has found a way to take advantage of one strong love in her live to continue to be blessed with a second one.

Harless, who fell in love with a new-found long-distance running career just last year at Center High School, said she received direction from God when she visited Evangel University in Springfield, Mo., and after talking to the track coach there, signed a national letter of intent to attend the university.
