A vast improvement for the Center Lady Rider basketball team in 2011-12 was largely due to senior guard Lakia Shepherd, and she was honored for her hard work recently by being named to the All-District 18-3A First Team, according to head coach Tracy Kincade.

Kincade stated that Shepherd just missed receiving the league's Offensive Player of the Year award after scoring 17 points, pulling down five rebounds and recording three steals per game.

This season's Center Lady Rider basketball team was a far-cry from the squad of the past two seasons. The battle for the second and third playoff spots in District 18-3A continues to appear as if it's coming down to the wire. With the Diboll Ladyjacks having already sewn up the league title, Huntington, Central, Hudson and Center are exchanging blows like heavyweight fighters as they try to secure one of the two remaining postseason bids.

Center could have taken a big step toward doing that on Friday, but came up short on the road against Huntington, falling 54-37.

CENTER, Tx -- The Center Lady Riders played host to yet another state-ranked opponent here in Roughrider Gymnasium Friday night, and they found out the hard way why most of the "experts" think that the Zavalla Lady Eagles are one of the top Class 1A D-I teams in the state.

Twelvth-ranked Zavalla jumped on top early, leading 9-3 at the end of the first period, then continue to stretch that lead throughout the game, eventually defeating the Lady 'Riders (10-8) by a 48-31 count.
