BASK: Cloudy's soar to Summer Classic title

CENTER -- The Cloudy's keep it in the family; and what a talented family that is.

The basketball team participating in the Center High School Summer Classic made up mostly of Center's Cloudy family stormed through the competition and secured the championship Saturday night with a 74-64 victory over the North Stars here at Roughrider Gymnasium.

CENTER -- Center High School's Summer Classic basketball tournament was full of talent and exciting contests in Friday night's opening round. With players ranging from high school players to 'old pros', contests were intense and very competitive.

Cage camp helps to build skills, relations

CENTER - Center basketball players and coaches had the opportunity to give back to the community and to help future hoop athletes work on their skills on Saturday as Center High School hosted the first Roughrider Basketball Camp in several years.

Numbers were not large, but the volume of instruction was as the youngsters received pointers, ran through a number of drills, had a good time and received rewards for their efforts in the one-day camp held here at Roughrider Gymnasium.

Center High Head Basketball Coach Hiram Harrison has announced that CHS will be hosting the Center Roughriders Basketball Camp on Saturday, July 17.

The camp is open for boys and girls entering grades 3rd through 7th grades and will take place between the hours of 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. at Roughrider Gymnasium on the campus of CHS.

The cost per camper is $25, with the cost for each addition sibling being $15.

Former Nacogdoches Dragon basketball player Damion James will be in the National Basketball Association next season after he was drafted by the Eastern Conference's New Jeresey Nets on Thursday.

The 6'7", 226-pound guard/forward for the University of Texas Longhorns  for the last four years, is a 2006 graduate of Nacogdoches High School.

Kaspar Basketball Camps coming soon

The 2010 Danny Kaspar Basketball Camps will be held June 20-24 and August 9-13. The camps are open to boys entering grades 2-12 and will be held on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.
 

Center honors top athletes at banquet

Center High school recently held it's All-Sports banquet at the CHS Cafetorium. Among those athletes honored were Jeremy Small and O'Mattie Swindle, who received the annual R.E. Malone Awards. The R.E. Malone Award is presented each year to the school's top male and female atheltes.

Swindle was a standout athlete in volleyball, basketball and track. She participated in the Region III Track & Field Meet.

JACKSONVILLE -- When Center guard Ty Hubbard made a no-look pass to Jaelyn Short for a layup with 2:47 remaining in the third quarter Friday night here in the Vivian and Bob Smith Event Center, the Roughriders appeared to be well on their way to a berth in the regional quarterfinal contest as they led the Mexia Blackcats 49-32.

Owens funeral set Sunday at JISD gymnasium

Funeral services for Joaquin teacher and coach, Scott Owens, have been set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28, at the Joaquin ISD gymnasium, with Bro. Charles Williams and Bro. Randy Smith officiating. He was 48 years of age. Interment will follow at Price Cemetery in Joaquin.
