It was a tough season for the young Center Roughrider boys basketball team in 2011-12. After losing a wealth of talent a year ago to graduation, the 'Riders were in a rebuilding year this past season. Only three members of the squad earned All-District 18-3A honors when the season was concluded, but each of the players will be back in 2012-13.

The Shelby County Youth Basketball League recently wrapped up its 2012 spring season, with a pair of Tenaha teams capturing the 5th-and-6th Grade divisions, while Center squads took the other age groups.

In the 5th-and-6th Grade Boys Division, the Tenaha Heat, coached by Desmond Steadman, took top honors, followed by the Center Spurs (Joseph Mitchell) coming in second, with the Center Clippers (William Nash) placing third and the Timpson Thunder (Charleston Johnson) placing fourth.

The Center Roughriders have been on the outside looking in when it comes to the Class 3A state basketball playoffs this season. But with two games remaining, and coming off a 57-42 setback to playoff-bound Jasper on Tuesday, there is still a chance for a postseason berth for CHS.

But to make the playoffs, Center (10-19) has to defeat Kirbyville on the road on Friday and then knock off Hudson at home on Tuesday, while hoping that the Hornets fall to Huntington on Friday.

With every game that brings the end of the 2011-12 basketball regular season closer, each loss is magnified even larger than wins for the Center Roughriders. Battling to grab the third and final playoff spot Center finds itself 1.5 games behind third-place Hudson with four games left in the regular season after Tuesday night.

CENTER, Tx -- If the Center Roughriders are going to claim a playoff spot in District 18-3A, the time to make a run is now. 'Riders head coach Hiram Harrison has been telling his troops all year that the key to getting in the playoffs was to win all of your home games, and except for a loss to Jasper on Jan. 13, they've done exactly that. CHS is 4-1 to date in league games in Roughrider Gymnasium.

The Center Roughriders picked a bad time to turn the ball over as they went on the road to Hudson Friday night and gave the ball up 36 times in a 66-47 setback to the Hornets in Hornet Gymnasium.

The setback hurt the Roughriders' playoff chances as they dipped to 8-17 on the year and 3-3 in District 18-3A victory. But Center did bounce back Tuesday night at home to knock off Central, 61-51, to move within a game of third place. Center still controls its own playoff destiny.

CENTER, Tx -- The Center Roughriders took the court here in Roughrider Gymnasium Tuesday night looking to bounce back from Friday night's defeat at the hands of the Jasper Bulldogs, the team's second District 18-3A loss of the season.

Mission accomplished.

The Center Roughriders suffered through their worst shooting performances Friday night and it cost them in this District 18-3A matchup as they hit only 20% (14-of-70) from the field in a 47-40 setback in Roughrider Gymnasium to the front-running Jasper Bulldogs.
