Piney Woods Pigskin Picks will appear each Thursday through Super Bowl Sunday in February as sports minds across the Piney Woods predict the winners in high school, collegiate and NFL games.

CENTER -- With the start of District 18-3A volleyball action just over two weeks away, the Center Lady Riders aren't looking like a team that's ready to begin league play. The Lady Riders could only put together one sustained run, but otherwise appeared lethargic in a 3-1 setback to Kilgore here in Roughrider Gymnasium.

Class 1A powerhouse programs Alto and Tenaha will once again meet on the gridiron this week, marking the second time in 10 months the squads have tangled when both teams were state-ranked. This game highlights a very busy Week 2 of action involving teams in the PineyWoodsSports.com area.

A pair of cross-county rivalries brought out the best in Shelby County athletes this past week as the contests between Shelbyville and Joaquin and another between Timpson and Tenaha highlighted local play. But the most dominating individual effort during the Week of Aug. 29-Sept. 4 came from a little farther north.

The Center high school cross country teams started the 2010 season with improved times and top performances when they competed at the 13th Annual Davy Crockett Invitational at Hickory Creek Ranch in Crockett on Saturday.

The CHS junior varsity girls captured top honors in their division, while the varsity boys recorded a 4th overall finish and the JV boys posted third overall. A slew of Rider performers set personal times at the meet.

LINDEN - The Center Roughriders flirted with disaster all night long in their contest with No.12-ranked Linden Kildare (Class 2A) and it was a dangerous game that ended up costing the Roughriders a victory when the Tigers drove 77 yards in six plays and took just 30 seconds off the clock in the final minute to secure a come-from-behind 28-23 victory here at Jack Hetherington Tiger Stadium on Friday.
