For the second consecutive season Panola College sophomore Josiane Santos has been named as a NJCAA All-American. Santos was named to the honor this year after being named the Region XIV District K All-Region Player of the Year.

Joining Santos on the all-region first-team was sophomore teammate Marcela Alves. Fillies freshman Nausheen Merchant was named to the second-team all-region squad, while Panola's Samantha Peterson and Hali Turner received honorable mention.

Each member of the Carthage Lady Bulldogs were honored recently as a superlative or a member of the All-District 16-3A volleyball team by the coaches in the league after CHS completed a 20-15 season mark and a 5-5 league record.

Lady Dawg senior outside hitter Sara Williams was named the 16-3A Most Valuable Hitter, while sophomore setter Kenzie Tate was named the Most Valuable Newcomer in the district.

CARTHAGE, Tx -- On a night when the Carthage Lady Dawgs hoped they would be building for yet another postseason run, they found themselves thanking their three seniors for a great season and battling Pittsburgh for another 20-win season.

With no playoffs on the horizon, the Lady Dawgs bid farewell to seniors Sara Williams, Macy Cherry and Sarah Clakley and they put an exclamation point on the 2011 season with a 25-16, 25-15, 25-18 straight-set sweep of Pittsburgh here in Bulldog Gymnasium.

Picking up a win against District 16-3A leader Henderson was a huge task for the Carthage Lady Bulldogs Friday night in an effort to keep their slim postseason hopes alive. CHS roll to a 25-5 Set 1 victory and later took a 2-1 lead in the match. But CHS but couldn't hold off the Lady Lions, falling in a five-set match, 25-5, 27-29, 25-9, 21-15, 12-15, in Bulldog Gymnasium.

Despite a straight-set victory over Gladewater on the road Tuesday night, the Carthage Lady Bulldogs may be on the outside looking in when it comes to the 2011-12 Class 3A volleyball playoffs this year.

CARTHAGE, Tx – Spring Hill volleyball player Savannah Voelzke showed on Tuesday that sometimes it’s more important to work on the job at hand than to try for something extraordinary.

Voelzke did put some unusually good numbers in helping Spring Hill hold off Carthage, 25-12, 24-26, 25-17, 25-23, in a District 16-3A match here at Bulldog Gymnasium with 18 kills and four blocks. Voelzke had eight kills in the decisive fourth game.

It hasn't been a smooth first round of District 16-3A action for the Carthage Lady Bulldogs, but they're still in control of their own playoff destiny heading into this second round of league volleyball race.

Carthage (18-12) finished the opening round on a strong note Friday night with a three-set sweep of Pittsburgh in Pirate Gymnasium. The Lady Dogs took the match by a count of 25-23, 25-15, 25-22.

HENDERSON, Tx -- After losing the first two sets in Tuesday night's match, the Carthage Lady Bulldogs fought back to grab the third set, 25-23, and looked like they might challenge the Lady Lions in this District 16-3A matchup.

But Henderson took charge in the fourth set, grabbing a 25-12 victory and sending Carthage home with an even 2-2 league mark on the short end of a 1-3 score.

Strong play at the net Friday afternoon resulted in nine kills by Jordan Holmes, while the Carthage Lady Bulldogs received eight service aces from Sara Williams as they swept Gladewater, 3-0, in Bulldog Gymnasium.

Carthage cruised to the first set win, 25-13, before blowing to a 25-11 win in Set 2. The Lady Dogs weren't seriously challenged in Set 3 either, winning 25-14.
