Former Timpson head coach and current Gary High School baseball coach Ryan Cook has announced that he and former Stephen F. Austin softball player Haleigh Willis are offering baseball/softball instruction for those who are interested.

Cook, a former college baseball player at LaTourneau University in Longview and Willis, a California high school all-state standout in addition to her playing days at SFA, are offering lessons at the price of $30 for 45 minutes of work.

Beckville long run in the Class 1A playoffs prompted a number of its players to be honored recently on the All-East Texas Softball team, as selected by the sports staff of the Longview News-Journal. Carthage was also represented well on the squad. Here is a list of the complete teams:

Six area softball players received more postseason honors recently when two Carthage athletes and four from Beckville earned all-state honors from the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA).

Carthage third baseman Tori Jo White and second baseman Chelsea Tilbury both earned TSWA Honorable Mention All-State in their respective positions after leading the Lady Bulldogs to the playoffs in 2011.

Six area softball players have produced impressive numbers on the field during the 2011 season. But they have also been recognized for their efforts in the classroom as three Carthage Lady Bulldogs, two Center Lady Riders and a Beckville Ladycat were honored by being named to their respective Texas Girls Coaches Association Academic All-State Softball teams.

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Six years ago, Lander softball coach Doug Spears was retiring and riding off into the sunset of his home state of Texas. Today, he says his retirement plan is working out just fine.

"I'm enjoying retirement," said Spears, who posted an 803-474 record in 24 years as coach.

He retired Dec. 31, 2005, and moved back home to northeast Texas.

Led by the defensive play by senior third baseman Tori Jo White, the Carthage Lady Bulldogs placed seven players on the All-District 16-3A team that was selected by the league's coaches recently.

District champion Henderson and runner-up Spring Hill each had eight players selected, including three superlative honors from each school. They each also had two honorable mention selections.

A team full of youth and a first-year coach at the school, the Beckville Ladycats improved from day one and soared to new heights during the 2011 softball season. They finished the year just one win short of advancing to the state tournament in Austin and was ranked No.8 this week in the final Texas Girls Coaches Association Softball Poll.

CARTHAGE, Tx -- A playoff trip in 2011 was just one of the highlights for the Carthage Lady Bulldog softball team as the team's athletes were honored recently at the 2010-11 Carthage High School Female Athletic Banquet held in the high school commons.

Senior Chelsea Tilbury was named the Lady Dawg Offensive Most Valuable Player. She was also a First-Team All-District 16-3A Infielder and a member of the all-district academic squad.
