CARTHAGE, Tx -- With their shots not falling, the Carthage Lady Bulldogs relied on their defense Friday night to force 37 turnovers and hold Spring Hill to just 28 points in a 35-28 victory as the Lady Dawgs took over sole possession of second place in the District 16-3A standings.

The Carthage Lady Bulldogs are in control of their own playoff destiny and in the thick of the District 16-3A playoff chase. On Tuesday night they went on the road and took care of business, burying the Gladewater Lady Bears, 60-18.

CARTHAGE, Tx -- Chasity Traylor scored 15 of her game-high 18 points in the opening period as the Carthage Lady Bulldogs took a 13-point first-quarter lead, widened the lead to 21 at the half and then coasted from there in a 55-34 win over Henderson here in Bulldog Gymnasium Friday night.

Tambra Mitchell scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds Tuesday night as the Carthage Lady Bulldogs evened their District 16-3A mark at 2-2 Tuesday night on the road with a convincing 45-31 win over Gilmer.

The victory snapped a two-game league losing skid for Carthage, as they improved to 14-11 on the season. Carthage hosted Henderson Friday night and will opened the second half of district play on Tuesday when the Lady Bulldogs travel to Gladewater for a 6:15 p.m. contest.

The Carthage Lady Bulldogs struggled with their shooting Friday night, hitting just 20 percent from the field as they lost their second straight District 16-3A contest, falling to Pittsburgh, 36-22, Friday in Pittsburgh.

The loss, which dropped Carthage to 13-11 on the year, leaves the Lady Bulldogs with a 1-2 league mark heading into this week's play. Carthage traveled to Gilmer Tuesday night, before hosting Henderson Friday night at 6:30 p.m.

The Carthage Lady Bulldogs had a long holiday layoff, but it didn't appear to make any difference when they returned to the court Friday night as they rolled over Gladewater, 37-11, in the District 16-3A opener for both squads in Bulldog Gymnasium.

Some of the best small school basketball in the state of Texas will be showcased next week when Tenaha hosts the Third Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Scholarship Tournament Tuesday through Thursday (Dec. 27-29).

There will be 32 boys and girls team - including 12 of which are ranked in the Top 20 in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches - playing 58 games in local venues to see which squads will walk away with the respective championship trophies.

The Carthage Lady Bulldogs won two of their last three games this past weekend to claim second place at the Central Heights Tournament.

The Lady Dawgs opened the tourney with a 50-29 win over Cushing, before falling to Neches, 52-32. CHS then recorded consecutive wins over Laneville, 55-16, and Central Heights, 35-33, before losing to Neches, 60-31, in the title game.

CARTHAGE, Tx -- The Carthage Lady Bulldogs had a distinct size advantage over the San Augustine Lady Wolves Tuesday night. And when they decided to force the issue and pound the ball inside, the momentum blossomed for CHS and Carthage rolled to a 47-25 win here in Bulldog Gymnasium.
