CARTHAGE, Tx -- If the Spring Hill Panthers thought they could come to Carthage and it would be a 'cake walk' Friday night they received the biggest surprise of their season. The Dawgs came out ready, committing just 15 turnovers and keeping the Panthers 'on the ropes' until the final minute of play before SHHS escaped with a 50-43 win here in Bulldog Gymnasium.

The District 16-3A boys basketball race is a tough one, with only two games separating the top four squads after four games. Unfortunately for the Carthage Bulldogs, their time is running out if they want a chance at a postseason bid.

On Tuesday night the Dawgs went on the road and dropped a 62-55 decision to Gladewater to fall to 0-4 in league action, 4-16 on the season. Gladewater improved to 2-2 and stayed into a third-place tie with Gilmer (2-2).

CARTHAGE, Tx -- Two struggling teams from District 16-3A squared off here in Bulldog Gymnasium Friday night in an evenly-matched game. The game was still up for grabs until the Lions held the Dawgs to just six points in the third quarter to pull away for a 63-49 victory.

The setback was the eighth straight for Carthage, which dropped to 4-15 on the year, winless in league play with a 0-3 mark. Henderson picked up its first District 16-3A win, improving to 1-2.

Leading Pittsburgh by five points in the third quarter Friday night, the Carthage Bulldogs were hoping to use their 'clean slate' and open District 16-3A action on a high note. But a 22-0 run over a period in the final two periods hurt the Dawgs as it enabled the Pirates to come from behind for a 67-47 win in Pittsburgh.

Carthage (4-13) dropped to 0-1 in district action, while Pittsburgh improved to 1-0.

CARTHAGE, Tx -- It's been a tough season for the Carthage Bulldog basketball team and the immediate future of the team might not be getting much brighter. Without two of its starters on Tuesday night the Dawgs struggled getting underway, scoring four first-quarter points and went on to lose to Chapel Hill, 64-40, here in Bulldog Gymnasium.

The Carthage Bulldogs continue to show improvement on the season after their slow start. The Dawgs posted their third win in their last five outings on Tuesday when they recorded a 54-46 victory over Rusk in Eagle Coliseum.

The win improved the Bulldogs' record to 4-7 on the season heading into the Christmas break. Carthage will return to action on Wednesday (Dec. 28) when the Dawgs take part in the 2011 Wagstaff Holiday Classic at Tyler Junior College.

Some of the best small school basketball in the state of Texas will be showcased next week when Tenaha hosts the Third Annual Tenaha Holiday Hoops Scholarship Tournament Tuesday through Thursday (Dec. 27-29).

There will be 32 boys and girls team - including 12 of which are ranked in the Top 20 in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches - playing 58 games in local venues to see which squads will walk away with the respective championship trophies.

Panola College officially kicked off the summer last week with beginning of the Summer I Classes and the beginning of summer camps with the Panola College Baseball Camp.

The Panola Baseball Camp has traditionally kicked off the summer camps at Panola College for the last 20 years during the first week of June.

This year nearly 50 young baseball players from around East Texas enjoyed the camp, according to Don Clinton, Vice President of Student Services.

Tenaha varsity girls' basketball coach Laura Walker-Holmes has just completed her second season as head coach of the Lady Tigers, leading her team to district titles in both years at the helm. Holmes has announced that she will be hosting a youth basketball camp early next month.
