Carthage Independent School District voters went to the polls last weekend and approved all three propositions for the district, which was good news for the Bulldog football teams and other athletic programs as well.

Carthage first-year boys basketball coach Jon Haft offered a free basketball camp for sixth through eighth grade boys in order to give them some one-on-one work to help sharpen their skills as they prepare for their junior high and high school careers.

The camp was held last week at the Carthage Junior High School Gymnasium as the coach welcomed a number of interested athletes.

It may be the spring, but basketball fans can see some high school hoops on Saturday when the Gary ISD hosts the Gary Youth Sports Association Shootout.

Admission is $5 for the day. There will be concessions available at the new Bobcat Gymnasium.

Boys teams from Gary and Carthage will be the main attraction and will be joined by squads from the following high schools: Timpson, Joaquin, Central Heights, Sabine, Carlisle, Sabine and Cushing.

Carthage's Jared Twomey qualified for State Track & Field Meet in two events Saturday as he led four Bulldogs and two Lady Dawgs who advanced past the Class 3A Region II Track & Field Meet held at Texas A&M-Commerce.

Twomey will battle in Austin on Saturday, May 12, in the 110-meter high hurdles and as part of the Carthage 4x400-meter relay team. He will be joined by Tee Goree, Ed Pope and Tevin Pipkin in the mile relay.

Four members of the Carthage boys basketball team were honored recently by the coaches in the league when they were selected to the All-District 16-3A boys basketball squad. The Dawgs were led by Meechie Bowman, a senior guard who was a first-team selection.

Carthage senior Greg Brantley and sophomore Tee Goree were both second-team all-league selections, while Broc Jemison was given Honorable Mention status.

SPRING HILL, Tx -- Coming off their first district loss of the 2012 season, the Spring Hill Panthers responded with a vengeance Tuesday night, clinching the outright 16-3A title with a 65-28 win over Carthage in the regular season finale at Panther Gymnasium.

Spring Hill, which constructed at 13-game win streak before Friday’s 57-53 loss to Pittsburg, finished the regular season at 24-5 and 9-1 in 16-3A.

Throughout league play, the Carthage Bulldog basketball team has been on the cusp of recording wins time and time again, but have come up short for one reason or another. They have fought off injuries and youthful inexperience on the squad. But Carthage picked up a well-deserved win on Friday, recording a 42-40 win over Gladewater in Bulldog Gymnasium to celebrate Senior Night.

HENDERSON, Tx -- Henderson started the game with an 11-3 run and Carthage never got closer than five points the rest of the way as the Lions took a 55-43 victory in a District 16-3A tilt from Lions Gymnasium Tuesday night.

The Lions converted two offensive rebounds and a turnover during the game-opening run. Carthage's only points came on a Tee Goree free throw and basket by Greg Brantley.

CARTHAGE, Tx -- The Carthage Bulldogs missed opportunities to pull away in the second and third quarters on Friday night, and that gave Gilmer just enough daylight to escape with a 51-46 win over the Dawgs here in Bulldog Gymnasium in a District 16-3A matchup.
