Carthage first-year boys basketball coach Jon Haft offered a free basketball camp for sixth through eighth grade boys in order to give them some one-on-one work to help sharpen their skills as they prepare for their junior high and high school careers.

The camp was held last week at the Carthage Junior High School Gymnasium as the coach welcomed a number of interested athletes.

Area baseball players who want the opportunity to try out for a major league baseball team can try out for the Tampa Bay Rays in Hallsville next month.

Rays management is hosting the open camp on Tuesday, June 12, at Hallsville High School in the attempt to find local talent that could be an asset to the organization. The camp will be supervised by Rays scout Pat Murphy and under the direction of scout Scott Mitchell.

Carthage junior Jared Twomey may have barely earned a pair of berths to the University Interscholastic League Track & Field this past Saturday, but he made the best of both opportunities. Twomey earned a silver medal in the 110-meter high hurdles and was part of the Bulldog 4x400-meter relay that also captured a silver on Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.

The Beckville Independent School District Board of Trustees didn't have to look far to find its new Athletic Director and head football coach. After Mike Segleski, Jr. informed the district on Monday that he was turning down the position, Carthage's Eric Robinson was offered and accepted the dual position Friday afternoon.

CARTHAGE, Tx - Carthage female athletes Kamry Smith and Keewannee Day will be making their first trip to Austin on Saturday to compete in the University Interscholastic League premier track and field event. And although they have similar 'roads' to the State Track Meet, they have different perspectives on the event.

CARTHAGE, Tx - Despite qualifying for the Universal Interscholastic League State Track and Field Meet with the ninth-place wild card draw, four members of the Carthage Bulldog track team are hopeful that they will bring home a medal when they compete Saturday at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.

Senior Edward Pope, junior Jared Twomey and sophomores Tee Goree and Tevin Pipkin will compete in the 1,600-meter relay, while Twomey will have double duty, running in the 110-meter high hurdles as well.

It may be the spring, but basketball fans can see some high school hoops on Saturday when the Gary ISD hosts the Gary Youth Sports Association Shootout.

Admission is $5 for the day. There will be concessions available at the new Bobcat Gymnasium.

Boys teams from Gary and Carthage will be the main attraction and will be joined by squads from the following high schools: Timpson, Joaquin, Central Heights, Sabine, Carlisle, Sabine and Cushing.
