TIMPSON -- With the end of the season closing in, the Timpson Lady Bears and Joaquin Lady Rams played for pride here in Bear Gymnasium Friday night. Jakelia Caraway scored 23 points, including nine in the fourth quarter, as she led Timpson to a 56-45 victory over JHS.
The victory was the Lady Bears' second in 11 tries in District 22-1A play. It was also the second over Joaquin this season as Timpson improved to 10-16 on the season, 2-9 in league play. Joaquin fell to 3-23, 0-11 in district.
"It was good to see us come out on top tonight," said Timpson Head Coach Cody Anthony. "We've lost a lot of games during district after having a chance to win or losing by only a few points, which has been disappointing. I'm proud that the girls came out tonight and didn't quit and got the win."
Tenaha (18-10, 11-1) clinched the District 22-1A championship with a 55-32 win over Gary, while Cushing (18-8, 9-2) clinched second place with a 57-44 win over Mount Enterprise (15-14, 7-4). Despite the setback, the Galcats clinched third place in the in the league race with one game remaining.
Jakelia Caraway paced the Timpson attack, scoring eight points in the first period and nine in the fourth to finish as the game's leading scorer. Tan Eaden scored seven third-quarter points and poured in 15 for the game. Kamilya Adams added six points, Tammi Harris dropped in five, Shanee Adams pitched in four points and Felicia Crockett scored two.
Peyton Rutherford was the only Joaquin player in double figures with 11 points, pouring in nine in the first half. Jaime Raimond pitched in seven, with five of those coming in the fourth quarter. Olivia Worsham scored six points, Katelyn Cockrell, Melissa Jones, Jordan Welch and Alyssa Belrose scored four points apiece. Taylor Wilkerson and Michaila Duncan added two points apiece and Amber Owens scored one point.
The two squads combined for 14 turnovers in the opening period as they both came out pressing. With the contest tied 8-8, Caraway scored the final six points for Timpson as they forged a 14-8 lead at the end of the quarter.
Rutherford hit a 3-pointer for Joaquin to pull the Lady Rams to within 16-15 with 3:50 left in the half. Timpson struggled at the line down the stretch of the period, converting just 1-of-6 in the final 3:35 as Joaquin fought back to a 19-19 tie at the half.
Despite committing six turnovers in the third quarter, Timpson outscored the Lady Rams 17-7 to bolt out to a 10-point lead. Eaden had the hot hand for the Lady Bears, scoring seven points, while Caraway and Kamilya Adams each chipped in four points apiece.
Leading 26-23 with 3:32 left in the period, Timpson went on a 10-3 run for the remainder of the quarter to grab the 10-point lead heading into the fourth.
Timpson iced the game by scoring the first 10 points of the fourth quarter. Caraway scored six points - all on layups - and Timpson led 46-26 with 5:54 on the clock.
Joaquin then made a late run, but couldn't come closer than the 11-point final.
The Lady Rams will close the 2009-10 season Tuesday night when they host Gary. Timpson will visit Cushing. In the other league matchup, Mount Enterprise will travel to New Summerfield.
