Center girls head soccer coach Jonathan Vick was pleased with what he saw on the field Tuesday night when his Lady Riders took the field for the first time in 2010 against Tenaha. The scrimmage gave both coaches a chance to see what kind of team they'll be fielding for the season, which begins next week.
The Lady Riders were originally set to open the season today (Thursday) when they were scheduled to play a 'fill' game at a Lufkin tournament against Willis High School. The entire tournament that was being played at Lufkin High School was cancelled due to possibility of inclement weather. The match will not be made up.
Center will now open the 2010 season on the road next Tuesday, facing the same Tenaha team at Tiger Stadium. The match will kickoff at 7 p.m. and be part of a boys/girls doubleheader at Tiger Stadium (the Tigers will host Palestine at 5 p.m.). CHS will then participate in the Athens Tournament on Jan. 14-16. The two teams will play again in Center on Jan. 19.
Senior Fabiola Solis scored three goals for Center in Tuesday's scrimmage. Not to be outplayed, junior Norma Ruiz also added three goals. Freshman Celia Gonzalez also scored for CHS.
Lady Rider goalkeepers Maria Medrano and Raquel Hernandez combined to work the shutout in goal.
"The freshmen played awesome," said Vick later. "Stephanie Araujo and Berenice Esparza played great games on defense.
"And we have a lot more speed this year, which I think makes us a more dangerous team."
