The Center Roughrider soccer team battled Tenaha Tuesday night at Roughrider Stadium in the first scrimmage action of the season for both squads. The matchup gave both coaches some things to look at as they prepare for the respective season openers next week.
Center will open the 2010 season next Friday (Jan. 15) when they host the same Tiger squad at Roughrider Stadium at 7 p.m. The Tigers are set to open their season next Tuesday (Jan. 12) at Tiger Stadium against Palestine. The kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
The Tigers were originally scheduled to open the season Friday night (Jan. 8) against Carlisle, but that match has been postponed until sometime next month because of impending cold weather in Shelby County which should dip into the teens over the next several nights.
Center scored 10 goals in the scrimmage against the Tigers, while THS scored twice. Five different Roughriders scored goals in the scrimmage. German Lopez led the scoring barrage for the 'Riders as he found the net four times. Alex Perez and Eduardo Chavez each scored twice in the match, while Julio Martinez and Jonathan Carmona both cashed in one goal.
"The match gave us a lot of things that we noticed we have to work on," Center Head Coach Richard Ruiz stated Wednesday. "Despite it being their second year, Tenaha looked good and they had very good speed.
"We will play them again next week so that gives us some time to work on some of the things we saw in the scrimmage that we need to improve on."
Ruiz is in his first year as Center Head Coach of the Roughriders. He was an assistant last year when CHS qualified for the Class 4A playoffs for the first time in school's history.
