SHELBYVILLE -- Shelbyville running back Joseph Redmond scored five touchdowns and had 289 yards rushing Saturday afternoon to lead the Dragons to a 32-22 victory in the championship game of the Shelby County Youth Football League 10-12 Year Old Tackle Division here at Dragon Stadium.
Redmond received outstanding blocking from his offensive line to break him loose, and he did the rest on his own as he helped the Dragons to an 18-16 lead at the half, and then added two more scores in the second half.
But the victory wasn't easy for the Dragons. Joaquin scored first when the Rams took the opening kickoff and Nate Belrose connected with Tanner Williams for a 13-yard touchdown pass to complete a 4-play, 48-yard drive. Cole Powdrill scored the 2-point conversion to give Joaquin an 8-0 lead with 5:31 showing on the first-quarter clock.
Shelbyville came back and scored on its first play from scrimmage as Redmond got loose down the left sideline for a 51-yard scoring jaunt. Isaiah Stanberry tried to add the 2-point conversion, but he was stopped short, leaving the Rams with an 8-6 lead with 5:17 still left in the first quarter.
The teams traded possession before the Dragons were forced into a punting situation. But a strong rush by the Rams resulted in Belrose blocking the kick before it could get off the punter's leg and he recovered the loose ball in the endzone for the touchdown. Kase Yates added the 2-point run and the Rams led 16-6 with 11 seconds still showing on the first-quarter clock.
But the Rams were unable to contain Redmond. Once again he got away from the defenders, scoring on a 63-yard run down the left sideline with 8:00 on the clock in the second quarter. The try to two failed, leaving the Rams with a slim 16-12 lead.
On their next possession, it was Redmond who once again found daylight. He picked up 13 yards on the first play. Later, he ended the 7-play, 61-yard drive by scoring on a 50-yard run with just four seconds remaining before intermission. The scoring run came on a 4th-and-12 situation. The touchdown gave Shelbyville its first lead, 18-16, at the half.
On Shelbyville's first drive of the third quarter, Redmond once again found the endzone. This time the score came on a 50-yard run down the left sideline on the second play of the quarter. Redmond added the 2-point conversion for a 26-16 Dragon lead with 7:04 left in the third.
The Dragons added their final score on their next possession. They drove 45 yards in four plays. Redmond scored his fifth touchdown on a 41-yard sprint down the left sideline. The try for two failed, but with 2:14 showing on the third-quarter clock, Shelbyville's lead was 32-16.
Joaquin scored late in the contest on an 8-yard shovel pass from Brock Lawson to Tanner Williams with 34 seconds remaining to account for the final score.
